Changing game speed on a laptop

I just bought a new laptop and i can;t work out how to change the game speed. Function + and - change the map size, but nothing seems to change game speed. I have tried regular control + and - and nothing happens.

400 years is a long time to play on regular speed

Just bring up the menu/options screen.

Andrew solution is the easiest, However you could try a keyboard remapper.

There's a good chance that your laptop has an embedded numeric keypad that is activated by holding down the function key. Once you find out what keys are + and - in the embedded keypad, you should be able to change the speed. In my particular laptop, the embedded keypad keys for + and - are function P and function semicolon.
