In my current Persia game I've converted into Zoroastrian faith. However now it's weird to see Persia with Zoroastrian provinces only belonging to Muslim tech group with information about muslim penalties and producing units like muslim infantry or muslim musketeers. Good solution would be that Persia would belong a separate tech group, say "Persian", like Ottomans belong to Anatolian group. It could be either triggered after the conversion or be available directly from the beginning on. The bonuses mighty be slightly higher than those of Muslim group but lower than of Anatolian.

I know it's maybe lot of work for a country like Persia. But since the Zoroastrian faith was added (btw with very cool unique missions, hope more will come) why not complete it by adding a separate technology. Now the game with Zoroastrian Persia is a lot of fun. Playing a Persia returned back to its ancient religion, surrounded by hostile Shia and Sunni countries and be a unique country worldwide allows a lot of role-playing and add high immersion to the game. With a separate group the role-playing would work even much better, because the immersion isn't disturbed by a tech group and units not really compatible to your country now.

Or rename the Muslim group to something like 'Middle Eastern' since it includes non Muslims. I don't think that tech groups are where Zoroastrians need to get their flavor from, especially since they are a non-factor in most games.

I wouldn't give Zoroastrian Persia specifically any special treatment, as it's an obscure alt-history outcome. But a divide of the current Muslim group into Arab and Persianate spheres would make some sense, with non-horde/reformed horde Central Asia and Mughals falling into the Persianate sphere.

Zoroastrian religion is a far too small group to receive its own tech, and there's no reason why a single-province religion should have as much separate treatment as its own unique units where even the most detailed Western nations use the same ones. I'm in favor of renaming units and the tech group, but not because of Zoroastrians but because of the Coptics, a far larger non-Muslim religion under Muslim tech.

As mentioned in my first post Persia could have its own tech group, say "Persian", directly from the beginning on. Regardless if Persia is Zoroastrian or Muslim. Same treatment like in case of Ottomans having "Anatolian" tech group. First it would solve the issue of Zoroastrian Persia being Muslim. Second it would better represent the distinction of Persians from other Muslim countries. Third with a separate group also the units are different, by just renaming "Muslim" tech group into say "Middle Eastern" we would still have a problem of units like Muslim Infantry or Muslim Musketeers in Zoroastrian Persia.

Ah the title of the post cause a bit of confusion for me. Going to continue to play Devils Advocate though.

The units can just be renamed 'Middle Eastern Infantry'. Anatolian is a bit of a special snowflake on the tech groups to simulate how the Ottomans did well in this period. How much should tech groups be fragmented? Should there be a Berber group too? Siberian? Indochinese or both Indochinese and Indonesian? You could make arguments for all of them.

Note that tech groups are, in general, not very gradual. Even Europe, the most detailed area of the game, is mostly two different tech groups. All of India is one group, and all of Far East from Indonesia to Japan is another. It would be very inconsistent with that level of granularity to split Persia off by that measure alone, and the off chance that Persia becomes Zoroastrian is a poor reason in itself because there already are more notable non-Muslim religions in the same tech-group.

The most "unique" tech group is Anatolian, that represents the Ottomans' status as a historical Muslim contender against the Western nations, balancing between their ancient Islamic wisdom and the bold European innovations. More importantly, the Ottomans really need to have a better tech level than the rest of the Muslim world in order to have a chance to be as threatening to the Christian Europe as they historically were.

Makes more sense yeah given that Ethiopia starts out as "Muslim" tech as well.
