Less than a month before release but Theocratic Oligarchy and Democracy still lack description. What is this heresy?

I prefer Archon, because I associate Strategos more with the Byzantine Empire in CK2.

I wish they would as well. I've pretty much wanted it since the customization of title names for CK2 where they didn't let us rename stuff like "Emperor" to "High King" and the likes.

I very much agree, it doesn't seem like divine mandate would mean theocracy to me, but more like the ancient world's God-Kings and emperors ala Egypt/Mesopotamia/Imperial China.
Something like God Emperor would be best, or something of similar divinity/temporal power combo.

The reason they have it uniform is so that players can easily compare officials of the same rank. When you use custom names, it all becomes aesthetic, unless you memorise them all for every "culture" (the AI would have to use custom ones too, or it would seem stupid, given only the player species would use different names), as you can no longer easily tell what rank someone is.
Having said that, it would add so much to flavour if we *did* have custom ranks. I'm hoping that at some point we get custom ranks, and some sort of consistent image next to them so we can easily tell exactly how a "sqa'polor" compares to a "grand magistrate" in terms of responsibility.
I just don't know if that would scare off newer players.

It seems important for military rulers (at least those who have no higher authority) to represent themselves as not merely in charge of the military but in charge of everyone, so adopting the more general term Archon for the person at the top seems reasonable.

The name for the ruler of the Military Junta government form is indeed Archon, while the name for the ruler of the advanced/upgraded version (Ordered Stratocracy) is... Strategos.
