Back to Farama

Pisa, May 8, 1091—While the result was expectable given the numbers, the greatness of our commanders shines in how little losses our army sustains in series of battles which normally make an expeditionary force dwindle in size until it can be overcome by its enemies. No such happening here. As for how it went, Doge Gumba with his usually subtlety tackled light cavalry with heavy infantry, while the Almoravid heavy cavalry simply broke on the Hospitaller infantry's shield wall without killing a single man among the knights' less glamorous brethren.

This tips the scales of war heavily against the Abbassid.

But the Doge falls seriously ill just after the victory and is bedridden! His nose bleeds and he suffers thundering headaches.

Doge Recovers!

Pisa, June 25, 1091—The Doge recovers just in time to return to the south to rout the Saracens freshly recruited army at the gates of Cairo.

Congratulations on his recovery from Bishop Anastasio find him already hundreds of miles away.

Meanwhile a disease breaks out at Rafah, killing many of the besiegers but leaving the defenders unscathed...

... before the knights come and lift the siege.

It falls upon the doge to fulfill the unpleasant task of chasing the morale-broken Saracens before they can get their act together. He continues to release prisoners.

The Doge continues to enjoy the support of the Alliata family in these struggles.

Pelusia Converts!

Pisa, August 25, 1091—The inhabitants of Pelusia, both the traditional Copts and those who have converted to Islam, are rapidly converting to the Catholic faith! The conversions are attributed to the preaching of Bishop Guntard and his priests.

What Were the Bishop's Last Words?

Pisa, November 19, 1091—Bishop Anastasio is no longer among the living. No one knows what was in the letter he had sent to the Doge yesterday. (...)

He was simply passing his regards. There was no mystery. He was not expecting to die but his health was simply poor for his age.[/indent]

End of War Nearing?

Pisa, November 28, 1091—Our experts believe the Jihads might be ending soon if no new offensive is planned by the Caliphs. (...)

Revolt in Safed

Pisa, February 15, 1092—The Saracen peasants at Safed are revolting, thousand men in strength. The regent for Lattanzio d'Appiano cannot control the situation and is requesting assistance.

On a different note, Marshal Gerardo recently supports the Doge in the senate alongside the Alliatas, though missing the Bishop (RIP).

Lazzarino Gumba is Growing Up

Pisa, March 10, 1092—Lazzarino Gumba, Doge Gumba's only son and the only other living male of the family is a young boy of 14 noted for the justice of his character, the diligence which he pays to his studies and the charity with which he approaches others.

Reportedly, he once asked his father: 'How can I best serve the Catholic faith?' The Doge said nothing about holy wars and crusades, which he believes—strangely enough for someone who fights so much of them—to be a mournful necessity. Instead, he told his son to be just to all of its children.

The Doge himself is reportedly becoming more and more pious in the last months.

Prince Bishop Dies

Pisa, March 10, 1092—Bishop Huges, one of the missionary prelates in the Delta, who was a prince of France before taking the frock, expired Feb 25 at the relatively young age of 35 due to severe stress. May he find the peace he did not know in life.

Typhus Breaks Out

Pisa, April 22, 1092—Do not leave your home if you can help it. The bad air is killing the weaker of our citizens. It has struck with particular strength at the Doge's court, taking down the elderly Ermingarde Visconti and the young Euphrasia Komnena.

Construction Goes On

Pisa, June 10, 1092—The shipyard is complete. Now is time for city walls!

The shipyard will enable us to sustain a larger fleet, which in turn will need to take fewer turns to transport the army which we now have in the Templars and the Hospitallers in the event of Saracen attack. The walls are connected not only with siege defense but also taxation and population growth.

The Lady of della Gherardesca Dies to Disease

Pisa, July 11, 1092—Patrician Tedice (38) lost his wife Aloisia (30) to the disease today morning.

Accusations of Heresy Getting Out of Hand

Pisa, July 30, 1092—The veteran crusader Lord Mayor Pietro Visconti of Hebron was accused of heresy, but the doge intervened with decisive proof to cut the issue.

Whee! Withstood two Jihads - now would be the time to win the peace after already having won the war. And expand old Pisa a bit! :)

Thanks! He's building stuff all the time, but there will be much more. :)
