Centre of Reformation appeared in Montpellier. I'm France. Now everything is turning Protestant. It's not even the age of Reformation yet. What am I supposed to do? I can't convert the province because of -100 zeal and I don't want my whole country to turn Protestant.

Any suggestions?

Don't play Protestant then. You can get easy tolerance of heretics via the French ideas + the edict of Nantes, and once the religous zeal wears off you can convert the provinces back.

Alternatively, open with Humanist as France. French Wars of Religion are so back-breaking that any measure should be taken to avoid them.

Isn't humanist France with edict of Nantes +2 or +3 tolerance of heretics? At that point you can almost completely ignore religion as it really doesn't matter.

Keeping my stability up, whilst coring, whilst getting full humanist ideas ASAP because the whole south of my country is Protestant before the age of reformation even hits is an absolute pain.

I've given up. I can't do this anymore. I was prepared to deal with the Age of Reformation which is why I took Humanist as my 2nd idea. I wasn't expecting it to start IN MY COUNTRY. My capital was the first province to turn Protestant in the whole of Europe. I give up. I don't want to play such a random game. I have more luck predicting numbers on https://www.random.org/

This is stupid. Paradox know nothing about player agency. Another stupid aspect of RNG. I don't want to play Protestant and I shouldn't have to.

So don't. Make sure you join the counter reformation, get the resistance to center of reformation age bonus in the next age, and tank through it. Religious ideas can help you take it out if necessary.

It's not to hard to make it through the center of reformation. Just tank through. The game will carry on and those Humanist ideas will help from the moment you get those tolerance and unrest modifiers on.

If you're having trouble with admin management, there are ways to deal with it. Vassals help offset the admin mana management for conquests by letting diplo mana do something, you can focus more on higher level admin advisors, you can focus on admin, get that power projection up for the +1 mana generation, take the clergy estate privilege for +1 admin mana, and disinherit (read yeet out the window) any heir that has awful admin.

Honestly, the game gives you plenty of tools to do much of what you want and mitigate the randomness.

I'm sorry, this is like the third thread you've made where you have complained because the game is offering some amount of resistance to what appears to be your attempts to ple-plan and perfect your run. This isn't that kind of game. You're trying to play something that isn't what you want it to be.

In any case, at best it's mildly annoying. If you pick religious ideas you can convert the provinces back fairly easily on 10 years. If you pick Humanist you can totally ignore the reformation.

Again, I want to emphasize that it really looks like you're trying to get an experience out of EU4 that it simply isn't offering. Try another game.

Not sure what the issue is here. I just had a France game with the first Protestant Center in Burgundian Charolois, right across my border. Then, two Reformed Centers sprouted up in Franche-Conte and Zweibrucken--both on my borders. I also have a Reformed Center up in Lothian, Scotland converting my French Ireland.

Between the Edict de Nantes and Tolerance from Humanist ideas, I am always above 100% religious unity.

If you have humanist ideas like you say, there should not be a need to do anything. Your religous unity will be high, the provinces won't give you much penalties. Make sure to pick the decisions that give tolerance of heretics, avoid the ones that reduce it, and keep on like nothing has happened.

About when the reformation starts, it is dependant on the global reform desire. Depending on the choices of all catholic rulers it can happen earlier or later, but you can predict it by checking reform desire regularily in the religious window.

Religion is part of the identity of the country you pick. I wouldn't want to play a Protestant France, Castile, Portugal, any Italian nation or any other predominantly Catholic country. It's just part of the way I play the game.

I don't understand why anyone would pick Byzantium and convert to Catholicism either.

My entire country was turning Protestant before my very eyes, pre 1500, on some entirely random event I couldn't prevent because -100% zeal and who knows. It's very annoying and if we're going to make the "historical" argument, well there are lots of things in this game that aren't historical which no one cares about. This is annoying and fundamentally changes the fabric of my save. I also much prefer the dynamics of being a Catholic country.

Not wanting to take humanist ideas that early? The Reformation is one of the biggest reasons I hate playing in Europe anymore. The religious zeal modifier is literally cancer.

Humanism doesn't actually guarantee you'll stay over 75% religious unity it just makes the chances higher too. I've had saves in which the Reformation barely spread and others in which it took over the whole of Europe. Regardless of history it's the biggest pain in the ass you can think of and the fact it can spread in the most random places is a joke.

One time the entire Greek population was...Protestant.

The game throws up historical events and non-Catholics were certainly a big part of French history in the early years of the game. That you want to play as Catholic isn't the problem, it is your insistence that the Reformation for some reason shouldn't impact your country. Deal with it, there are plenty of tools at your disposal in the game to do so.

Don't flip Protestant then. Tools to deal with the Reformation have been described to you. Use them.

As per Catholic Byzantium, people do it because they can. I did it myself because I wanted to make a Protestant Byzantium for fun.

There are zero issues with you being Humanist France and having Prot provinces, you can LITERALLY ignore it. There's absolutely NO negatives to having Prot. Provinces, which means you have literally nothing to complain about. You're not going to have rebels to try force convert you, you're still Catholic France.
