I agree partly. Yes, the use of propaganda material (thats what StGB §86 is about) is allowed in art, etc. But there is a very open debate if some games are of educational or even art character. If you look at the last two games which where forbidden (KZ Manager and Wolfenstein IIRC) both had none of this. HOI has at least a partly educational or documentary character - e.g. look at all these events which show "the path to the war" and beyond.

Just because there is a debate on whether or not the law should be changed, does not mean the law has changed. All I see here is that people are disagreeing with posts that are spelling out the facts as they are right now. Yes, he did mention in his later posts that he is happy with the current laws. Those are the posts that I disagree with. Rationale? You simply don't disagree with facts; instead, disagree with the opinions and interpretations of the facts.

The disagrees concerning the facts gave me some good laughs. I can live with them. it was for me like someone disagreeing, that our planet is in the solar system. OP seems to be having a very personal interest, for having Hitler in the game, so he disagreed to every (!!!) post i made (looked it up in his recent activity protocol)..

Concerning the changement of the law in the future. Yep, I am against it, but i respect every opinion, who wants changing status quo.

Actually it isn't like that. Laws in Germany are cocnluded by the Bundestag, which is directly legitimated by the people in democratic elections every 4 years. If the people would want it otherwise, we'd have another party ruling the country...and i know not a single buddy, who likes to have forbidden portraits or symbols in his video game...and i have plenty of those buddies...

Not all of us. I agree with not wanting swastikas in the streets. But making video games equal to movies, legally speaking? Yeah. That'd be nice actually.

My favourite moment in the stream was when Jakob gave that superb quote by Max Hastings - I really enjoyed knowing how much indignation it would cause to the worshippers of those two thugs. Fallout 4 had to rename the Morphine to something else, can't use drugs' names in games for German release.

I just wanna point out that this type of statement and its use by developers is a pretty cheap way of getting free coverage in german media (of all sorts ).


So, being the no nonsense person i am, or cynical if you wish to do so, if i were a game-dev and i developed a game that covers a ww2 period and germany has a place in it, then i'd do the following:

• - release a normal version including swastikas and nazi regalia for flair and immersion.
• - create a preemptive castrated version for german speaking regions.
• - not engage on discussions about why i am doing it officially.
• - hope it gets picked up by media and gets published as "german version to comply with german laws" , "not under USK", "castrated version".

why ?

• - Free PR (there is no BAD PR) in german speaking regions.
• - Free PR beyond german speaking regions, if they pick it up from german media sources.
• - boost in sales in german speaking regions because it is censored (and thereby safe to buy) and by those that just don't give 2 flying ***** and buy the "uncut" version on top of the "cut" version.

There is no downside for a dev to do so, as long as you can actually release your game in said region(s).

LOL...i read your post and understood exactly what you meant. The jurisdiction is outdated??? I am pretty happy, that we got these laws in Germany, since still some people tend to forget or don't know, what actually happened in my country from 1933 to 1945. You can see youtube videos, where younger people in germany think, that hitler is our actual chancellor...

No one forgot anything and it`s impossible to forget.

You can`t just repress your entire history because of WW2, the history of the German people spans for thousands of years.

If you are so moralist, you also have a moral responsibility for Europe`s well being, as Europe`s economic and technological leader.
When Germany lost WW1, Europe lost. Germany was, is and will continue to be the most important country given it`s geographical position and economy.

With a stable Germany, Europe would have been far more powerful, wealthy and populous and any eventual war that would have broken out after WW1 would have been far less deadlier with Germany leading the European democracies.
