I wonder, will you be able to downgrade your units again or is it permanent?

For example, if you dont have enough fuel and instead of a mechanised or motorised infantry brigade you want to have your normal infantry brigade back.

Hopefully light armor can go to medium armor too-- fingers crossed.

This I hope developers considdered in the first place, or did they, since medium armor is standard and by the end of war whenever possible armoured divisions were brought to medium standard.

And some medium armor units were sometimes(Germans in the first place) transformed to heavy armor to exploit expirience and excellence of best crews(and to preserve those skilled crews better in massive tanks).

Ever heard of disbanding units and building new ones? It's been there "for a while," but hey, don't let that stop you from calling an inconvenience an impossibility.

And throwing all existance, expirience ,history, strategical place ,spice and pride of one unit away?

Its sandbox spirit you know, build castle from sand, than destroy it to build another one new and bigger.
Sorry ,I didnt noticed your "catch" before, my senses are simply not tuned for that kind of logic, especialy when trying to enjoy most complex ww2 grand strategy of all times.

This was such a badly needed option as the OP said. One of the first things I would upgrade is those 3 light tank divisions Germany gets once medium armor comes in. Mechanizing infantry for a 1942 USSR campaign would be another priority.

I will realy create my own Wittman unit. Start with stug III and end up with tigers. ;)

But remove him accordingly on August 8th. in 1944. :)

That's the way Germany did it later in the war. New units were outfitted with modern toys while old ones remained strong only on paper. AFAIK only some SS division got a different treatment. And given how little experience units actually get in HoI (plus how high they can start), you're back to confusing an inconvenience with an impossibility.

Please.
Best end most expirienced troops were in priority to get new equipement allways in history of warfare. In the days of Alexander the great, best men got best equipement, in napoleon war best men were assembled in grenadiers..etcetera,etcetera..
Its is simple logic of military economics, make best unit what you have even better if you can troughout the war to preserve and maximaly exploit their quality.
Only catastrophic situation on battlefield and economy can prevent this(say Germany collapsing in late 1944/1945)

The example: german Leibstandarte division-formed of highly motivated volunteers was inicialy militia, this miltia than expaned to foot division. After performing extraordinary Liebstandarte was upgraded to motorised division, to eventualy at the end became mechanised/panzer divison.

Its not incovnience, your "catch" can not recreate path of Leibstandarte, except by multiple disbanding and producing new one Leibestandarte 3 to 4 times during the game-in practice,it is the term you are avoiding:impossibility.

Get your facts straight. Germany already stretched panzer divisions for Barbarossa (1 armoured regiment instead of 2, almost always understrength). That was long before a catastrophic collapse.

Game mechanics allow you to swap a regiment in a division, so upgrading one at a time, you could retain most of the experience. And you'd probably do it just for elite divisions, so it's not like it stops you from playing or hurts your style a lot.

But you are used to, and you don't whine about wholesale upgrades of the entire friggin' army. Stuff just pops up in place of old equipment without any logistics problems, but that's OK. A few divisions that had to be upgraded manually to keep them historical, now that's a major issue...

And that is inability to motorise infantery.

If we look back to HOI history from old HOI I to this date this capital, hughe, enormous issue is NOW(Semper-Fi) solved.

Imagine we play Germany and defeat USSR and have 500 IC(largest industrial power on the face of the Earth),but you cant,I repeat you can not motorise your foot infantery division despite your industry now can produce millions of motor wehicles a year ,and with rivers of oil flowing from captured oilfields everywhere-horror, isnt it?

Trucks are coming guys!:D

I must admit I find it somewhat ironic.

I'd have LOVED this feature in Hoi 1/2 but in Hoi3 I can't really think of anything I'd upgrade as I find motorized/mechanized inf to be unnecessary resource hogs which are inferior to pure armored/leg inf armies.

Not saying I don't appreciate it though it may come in useful when taking over the entire world as germany in arcade mode but if you play with supplies mot/mech just makes very little sense imo.

Its about elite units, preserving their expirience, value, pride, tradition....keep them going during modernisation and dinamisation of warfare.

Ah, throwing words into the wind......

To me that's part of the beauty of the HoI 3 system, you have to actually take logistics into consideration when building your army. Mech/Armor still has it's benefits over inf/armor, namely speed which is a great boon in HoI 3. But you can no longer field mass armies of it, you have to eventually draw the line.
