I work at the university of Amsterdam. I "manage" a lab with 30 computers in a LAN. I want to organise a MP-game on some evening, but I first want to test if it is possible, which speed I can use, etc.

I have only one CD, so I wondered if it is possible to test with one CD. I have read some messages saying yes, other saying no. Can somebody give the answer ? I don't want to install the game/pathes on those computers if it isn't possible.

I don't know if I can give the final answere. But in my experience on my own LAN I always needed a CD for every computer. If you tried to not use one it would just pop up a screen saying "please insert cd" or something like that. I wouldn't recomend going to all the trouble of installing the game and patches on 30 computers on the off chance that it would work either, because I am pretty sure it doesn't.;) I finally just bought 4 copies of the game so I could play it, the only problem being I think I am the only person in the state of Vermont who plays this game. :D

The problem is that someone gave the idea it is possible:

quoting: Can two computers on a home LAN also play with others on the internet, and are two EUII disks required (because in a home LAN game without internet, you only need one).

The message comes from the sticky: setting up a network in your home.

Well in my own experience I have never gotten it to work. It always knew that there was not a disk in the drive. I guess in theory you could share your Cd drive, so that the computer is fooled into thinking you have the disk there. But I am not sure, as I am no computer expert. In the end you will probably just have to break down and buy more copies as I did, unless you have better luck.

Maybe you only need a CD, when you start the game.
But what mostly suprises me is that noone seems to know the answer (or read this thread, except you). Is it such a strange question ?

Maybe not so much a strange question, but the fact that the verdict is still out on it. Half say yay, half say nay. So who knows which is right. I am going by personal experience here and it never worked for me. I guess you could always test it by installing everything on only two of the computers, that way if it messes up not so much clean up work to be done? As far as me being the only one to read and post here. Well I like to check over all the post in the MP and Clan section and post on the ones I may have an answere too. Also I figured that since no one else seemed to be jumping up and down, I would give you my wisdom on the subject, which is very little as you noticed.:D Just trying to be friendly, "very rude when no one wants to even try and help you" as my old pappy used to say, still does as far as I know too. :)

Edit: BTW, this has nothing to do with the post. But I would just like to say that you did a very good job on that EUreader of yours. Very easy to use and understand for us computer challenged folks.:) Anyways thanks for making it, as I am sure everyone feels the same way.

I have been playing EU2 over LAN since release. We are 5 to 6 players and we never had probs playing with only one CD.

The CD is need during the initial loading sequence. After that you can remove the CD to the next player.

PS: By showing the game to new players most of them were excited and bought their own copy of the game. Nice side effect.
