Somebody in another thread mentioned using espionage to cause a coup in another country for the purpose of kicking them out of their faction/alliances. I'm trying to do it, but it hasn't worked yet. I don't have a lot of spies yet in the target country. Are you supposed to move them closer to yourself politically before you switch the intelligence task? Has anyone done this?

As I recall coups were added in one of the expansions, so they are not in the base game.

Basically you put spies into covert ops, and when you have enough points you can attempt a coup, with a very small chance of success. The enemy's political system must be divided, so using "support our party" can help.

Typically the way I do it is put 10 spies in said nation from day 1. Those 10 spies focus on counter-espionage for a time to reduce the enemy's domestic spies to 0, then set 2 pips into "support our party" (unless your country's party is the one in power - then this will be pointless) and then 1 pip into "covert OPs" to build up covert ops points to eventually rack up enough to attempt a coup.

It appears to be affected by National Unity of the target country, support for your own party compared to theirs, etc. You need 20 points of Covert Activity to activate it, and the odds are low unless their NU is trash and your equivalent political party has a significant advantage over their political party in their country. Ideally, that means reducing their NU, raising support for your party, and building up Covert points, all while maintaining superiority over their defensive spies......not a trivial task unless their country is already a political disaster (FRA qualifies).
