I was wondering when catholic heresies start to crop up with prevalence? I have had low moral of the church in my games but the heresies still rarely form. Is there a mechanic I am missing that leads to the formation of heresies in large numbers? :ninja:

You're only missing bad luck (or good luck, if you want to become a heretic). It is only moral authority that's responsible for the spread of heresy, and it's usually quite noticeable. With my latest game as the Kalbid Sultanate, the Shia faith, with its moral authority around 90, rarely suffered from any heresy (I picked up one throughout the game, and that was when it was still around 70). The Catholic faith, on the other hand, had heresies appear in a patchwork fashion all over Europe. Of course, most of those provinces were reconverted. Even worse were the Sunni, who failed several Jihads and lost out to the Fatimids in several holy wars. Just about every Sunni heresy was present and held sway over a decent part of the map.

Catholics losing religious wars or a lost Crusade lower religious authority.

Events that lower it:
A King or Emperor rejecting papal investure
A Catholic with a bishop prisoner, refusing to release him after the Pope asks
A Catholic with a heathen councellor, and refusing to stop using him/her
A Bishop who likes his liege more than the Pope, refusing the Papal demand to be replaced

Plus of course mods can tie religious authority loss into more events.
