Chapter 80
King Unuist the Second
The Best thing Ever
Ever since the reign of the new "Duke of the Gau's", Unuist sent Luitgard to convince him that Unuist's rule was good. Trouble was that he was a catholic zealot. So he sent the court chaplain to convert him.
Bridei asked Unuist to another family outing. Unuist joined, having nothing better to do.
Pedur was there, and the two enjoyed the time together. Though, Pedur had a bit of a cough when leaving.
Eager to test out the new army, Unuist pressed a claim of one of his vassals. Grisons would be his, and this army would bring it to him.
Earl Antso asked to approve a duel. Apparently, he had several rivals for his claim, many of which contesting it with duels. Unuist accepted it, though he worried for the outcome. Antso proved himself, and slayed the claimant.
Another family meeting. Unuist went to it as well. He enjoyed all of these get togethers.
Luitgard reported that the stubborn catholic duke was slowly being sweetened up. Another year or two and he would be clay in his hands.
Archbishop Girom died, meaning a new chaplain had to be appointed. Bishop Maelchom was appointed, being the most devout and learned. He was sent to convert the duke like his predecessor.
More good news. Another Anglian province has converted. The work of the good cathar bishops was going well.
Little Pedur has finally come of age. He is taught as a steward, though he is not the best in it. But, he still has uses. He'll run the building projects in Unuist's domain. The boy has already got ideas on what to do, though some designs are a little excessive.
Apparently, the Great Holy War failed. Byzantine Georgia remains in christian hands.
Another family outing... Of course, Unuist went and he enjoyed it, but he thought that maybe they were a bit too frequent. Then again, court work was boring, so maybe this would be good every few months.
Like father like son. The new duke of cornwall fabricated a claim on Somerset. When will they learn?
Apparently there was an Anti-Papacy that went on. Unuist cared very little. Different pope, still catholic.
Sophie had been acting haughty recently, flaunting her titles to the courts. Unuist taught her some humility. It didn't stick, but she stopped being a braggart.
News came to Unuist in the afternoon. There was a crusade. Unuist feared this day would come, when the catholics would band together to take back Middle Francia. It was against Francia, but... not his part.
The pope had called a crusade against West Francia. But why?!?! Unuist racked his head on it and then asked Bran his spymaster why. Bran told him.
Emperor Hildebert was... a heretic... A lollard to be exact. Unuist wondered why such a zealous man would turn against his church. Bran even had trouble knowing why. Regardless, Hildebert had to fight off the catholic world for another of his kingdoms. Was this the collapse of Francia? Was this the horn that sounded the rise of Catharism?
Shenanigans
Bran is a legend. I have trouble not picturing him as Loki at this point.
Aenbecan seems to be getting around. The pervy merchant has bedded many woman already!
Five lovers! Oh my. No doubt a remnant of the old seduction system.
Though, thinking about it, he is a merchant. And the rich trade between the Francian holdings and the Anglian holdings gives him a reason to travel between the two often. I mean, literally three of his lovers are Earl Antso's courtiers. He even has a swarthy baby girl.
