Has there been talk if there are going to be random events during battle or while moving around the map that could have massive ramifications for the player. Of course these events would be super rare but some things i coudl think of would be.

  • Say during strategic re-deployment your generals Jeep crashes or plane has mechanical problems and crashes.
  • Leader contracts malaria and is out of action for a couple of in-game weeks.
  • Planes get lost traversing the Pacific or Atlantic
  • The explosion of a Supply Depot while loading or unloading supply which would cause units to loose there supply chain for a day or two.

As state these would be very rare events, but all of them have happened not just during WWII but many wars I know this would just add flavor and most likely is more attuned to be added in a mod but it was just an idea i just had.

The problem I see with such catastrophic random events is that either the player doesn't care about it when it happens to some low-skill leader, or that he is frustrated that it happened to a high-skill leader and reloads the game :)

The part where the leader is unavailable for some weeks is less frustrating, so that might be a good idea.

you could have some of the events conected to the territories.
That would save the game form things like "your leader in Siberia has contracted malaria:eek:

Assasinations of ministers are already in HoI2 via the intelligence/espionage interface right?

But no missions for assassinating generals. If you kill the minister Yamamoto, the leader still stays.

That's cus they were all separate IDs in HoI2 - in HoI3 I believe they will be linked properly, sort of like how leaders who are also monarchs work in EU3.

Very interesting idea. To build on it, it would be great to see leader trait development during the war. A commander who is especially successful (or a failure) during a battle or campaign gaining (or losing) a trait based on the performance of units under their command. Maybe even hidden traits that are revealed once a commander is put into a situation that doesn't mirror their existing skills.

A good example would be Midway. Halsey is taken out by psoriasis on the eve of battle putting Spruance in command. Although a cruiser skipper, Spruance turns out to be a gifted carrier commander.

Definitely too late for inclusion. Maybe in HoI 4 ;)

Actually, this is a good idea. I'd rather there be a random chance of any leader dying in an accident or ambush than the hard coded losses of generals in the existing game. (for example Deitl or Rommel). I see no reason for the historical losses of generals in the existing game, since as soon as you start, it's ahistorical anyway, and the random loss of a theatre leader would add a real 'ah crap!' aspect to the game.

I agree. I think that the deaths of leaders (and heads of state, actually - although this is probably a more controversial aspect) should be random. The player should be able to assassinate ministers and senior military figures (Generals and Field Marshals) using the in-game system - if people wish to mod in the historical deaths of such people (Hitler, Rommel, Yamamoto, &c.) by event then they may do so, but I wouldn't like to be handicapped in such a manner in my games, when most/all other aspects are more open-ended.

"Der Fuhrer is hit by a lightning!"

"Japan sinks by a massive earthquake!"

But seriously, I think it would be really annoying if random stuff happened in the game. You have no idea how pissed I was when I found out that Zhukov was one of the generals who were purged in the Great Purge event in HoI2. There are already historical events for these. Like plane crashes for nationalist spain and Hess going cuckoo.

So, you think that it being 'annoying' is a good reason to not have it in the game? :eek:o

Annoying stuff happens quite a lot in war...

If it adds almost nothing to the game to make it more fun or interesting then yes.

I mean really, how often does a leader die in a jeep crash or plane crash? I know there were couple historically that happened, but it's so infrequent that it's not worth adding as a general feature in the game and best left as historical events like during the Spanish Civil War. Should there also be random heart attack, stroke and suicide events?

You're being flippant now, and there's no need.

I'm not advocating a series of specific death events - merely a generic one with a small (5% ?) chance of firing. Sometimes it would be a minor leader and make no real difference, but on the off chance that a general or field marshal dies in the midst of a large-scale campaign then you would really feel the consequences.

It would certainly be interesting for ministers, and I see nothing particularly unrealistic about it happening. So long as it's not bugged, and the chance of it firing remains relatively low, then it stikes me as being a rather sound idea.

And then a lot of people would be so annoyed that they would reload a previously saved game :p

I'm not a big fan of any of those random events, even the positive ones :)
