There is a national idea that makes your cavalry into cataphracts increasing their offense by whooping +100%!

Add to this their speed, doesnt this make them by far the best unit in the game?
I guess for a manpower-poor and money-rich nation at least.

If the 100% bonus was handed out right from the word go, then yes Cataphracts would form an almost unstoppable force. However as the game develops many nations will gain many advancements to the Organisation and Dicipline of thier heavy infantry units. This will severly negate the benefits that would appear to make Heavy cavalry unstoppable.

This isnt to say if you had a decent Ratio of Horse archers in the mix, that they wouldnt be able to overcome this obstacle also.

Finally cavalry like other EU games cant be used to storm fortifications, so its long drawn out sieges that will wear your men down due to attrition if you have them stacked in any meaningful Quantity.


As with every EU game its largely down to working out what an enemy will throw at you and preparing to combat that threat.
