potski said:There was an independent Ukraine only a very few years (in historical terms) before WW2, during the Russian Civil War. Ukraine has it's own language and culture from hundreds of years earlier, when it formed a major country in eastern Europe. It existed as an independent country "Kievan Rus" for 500 years until it was carved up by Russia, Austria-Hungary and Poland, following the devastation caused by the Mongol invasion of the 13th century.
Only because Kiev is the capital of modern-day Ukraine it doesn't mean that the 'Kievan Rus' was Ukrainian. Actually, there weren't any Ukrainians at that time. Just like there weren't any 'Bosniaks' (Muslim people from Bosnia) before the arrival of the Ottomans.
The Battle of Poltava (1709: Sweden with 'Ukrainian' help against Russia. That's why they have a flag of blue and yellow colour like the Swedes.) caused more or less the 'foundation' of a Ukrainian identity by Cossacks. Btw, Ukraina means 'borderland'.
...only because some may find it interesting...
