this is one of those words i read in pds games so many times, it's everywhere, and it's not a word that i usually use in casual conversation with other people, where pronunciation can be learned

so what's the right way to say it?

i lean more towards bell-ee, but then i've heard it (on some youtube videos for example) as bell-eye, which to me sounds a little pretentious and silly and i dont know why.. might be a mother tongue thing

I'm pretty sure that it should be "Casus bell-ee" (pronounced like "belly"). I've never heard a latin word ending with -i be spoken like "eye".

British English pronunciation: /ˌkɑːsʊs ˈbeli/

American English pronunciation: /ˌkɑsʊs ˈbeli/

Or at least according to http://www.macmillandictionary.com/.

Its Latin, so no crazy stuff with pronouncation of a same letter in 10 different ways depending on the word.
As such I`m quite sure its Bell-ee. Those who pronounce it as Casus Bell-eye should be hanged :p.

So are we free to assume that they've pronounced letter 'B' as 'EFALEKFLAEFK' and 'V' as 'EFJAEFKMJA' then? No recordings, but a few languages descending directly from it, and ages of knowledge preserved in that language as well. Oh should probably add: ages of it being used for religious ceremonies. I think it's quite safe to assume that we do know how it was pronounced.

Well, we have an idea about how it was pronounced, but we don't know this language as well as we know a living one.
But I was being sarcastic, I thought it was easily understandable.

According to

oald8.oxfordlearnersdictionaries.com/dictionary/casus-belli

it can be either. Personally, I'd just suggest pronouncing it either way, and if anyone really cares so much as to correct you, just pronounce it that way in front of them.

It's latin, so it's like italian pronunciation: bell-ee.

Just no.

You can pronounce Latin any way you wish unless you are trying to read roman poetry, in which case you have to start guessing at the right way...

Myself, I would go for bell eye

I was fairly sure that Latin, as it's used in the religious world today, changed quite a few of the rules in pronunciation, etc, as opposed to classical latin.

Are you talking about the Pope? Many more people speak latin than just him. And it derives directly from ancient latin. Also it's kind of the "official" pronunciation. So why not use it.

As you can see it on my video, I'm not talking of the Pope. And this pronunciation is as official as the Polish pronunciation of latin. It wouldn't make any sense to use polish rules to read latin, doesn't it ? The pronunciation of latin depends on when the text you are reading comes from, if it comes from the first century, you must use the restored pronunciation from this time. If you are reading a text from medieval ages, you must use this time pronunciation. But there is no "official" pronunciation. But, as I already said, do it as you will, it's not like an ugly roman nationalist will scream at you if you do it wrong, they are all dead :)
