Easiest way is to get a royal marriage with and then claim the throne of the country you want a CB against. This will lower the relations of the other countries you have RMs with, though.

Reputation is the same as BB, and it increases over time. Faster if you have a monarch with good dip-value...

If the country you want to DOW has a CoT, flood it with your merchants. Not all countries are as likely to embargo you, but a lot of them will (Venice, especially, seems allergic to human merchants in it's CoT).

I find the loan them money thing to be quite difficult to pull off. Haven't tried it very often, but I don't remember the AI ever accepting a loan, even with a 1% interest rate and a zillion years to pay it back.

Warning a nation (or, alternatively, guaranteeing the independence of a nation that might get attacked by your enemy) is also a possibility, but, again, the AI isn't suckered into wars by this most of the time. At least, that's my impression.

You can also arrange your alliance in such a way that you're bound to get into wars, either because your alliance members are warmongering SOBs or because they always seem to get picked on by others. Either way, you got a nice CB.

I find it very good when you want to initiate perpetual war against someone. You DoW them by some means, maybe even without a CB, rob them of every last penny they have in the peace treaty, wait a few years and offer a loan. They seem more likely to accept it then.

Everytime I Claim the Throne, I suffer a -3 stability hit. Do you have any ideas why?

I've tried the loan thing a few times. I offer a small amount of money at 1% for 1 month. It almost always gets accepted. And they have never paid it back.

Speaking of Casus Belli's how useful are declaring yourself the defender of the faith. That thing is wicked expensive I think i've done it once in a game but I don't remember if I gained anything from it since you never know when you loose it. I'm wondering if that thing is really worth the big bucks, and how succesful it is.

It's price of claiming the throne. Just give them a loan - it's much cheaper this way :) 100 gold for 3 month with 1% (10 gold refused more often).

I tried this, and it worked first time. However, I think I'm going to put this one in my personal "exploit" category - it seems to be just too easy. I like the imposed diplomatic tactics required by the absence of this trick (e.g. as posted, flooding CoTs, using alliance against your enemy and warnings/guarantees).

Defender of faith gives you slower research, higher morale, more violent heretics, and a CB against anyone attacking anyone of your religion, I personally don't claim the title, as I usually play as a tolerant research nation.

I personally think it is not worth it unless you want to roleplay the wars of religion, but it is a nice new thing to play sometime. You lose it the moment you lose a war. BUT:

A white peace is losing the war if you are in the aggressor alliance (a victory if you are in the defender alliance). Any war is lost if you are in the aggressor alliance and you don't get provinces or gold, so if you get a 100% warscore and request vassalage, military access and religious conversion, but no gold or provinces, you still lose the war and the title.
