Well, it’s back to Solaris - Black Thorns style.

Positives

- the bush leagues get fleshed out significantly more, with greater variety of fun events than ‘Mech on ‘Mech death match.

- We get to see some decent character development

- the misspelling of House Litzau’s homeworld as “Maldives” in the first two installments is corrected to Maldive, removing confusion as to whether the story was set on Maldive or Valdives.

- we get the sense that Walter and the Litzaus actually have a plan, and have set things in motion that will be paid off in part 4.

Negatives

Anachronisms.

- The Commando loadout corresponds to the 3A model, which shouldn’t be fielded until 3025. (Could be a custom job from a Mech-it-Lube speed shop, rather than a factory variant, though)

- Gray Noton is a big deal on the Game World, having come with his own ‘Mech after getting mercenary experience, whacked a “contender” in his first match, and is now a tourist attraction, dining with vacationing nobles. Problem is, the Solaris VII boxed set wrote up his bio as having been born in 2985 (making him just 16 in 3001) and having arrived on Solaris as a stowaway (hard to do with a ‘Mech) and making a name with a successful career in the minor leagues before leaving to be a merc from 3010 - 3015, then returned with his own Rifleman and went on to win the class 5 championship seven years in a row. It almost seems like this should have been set after 3015.

That’s Mabel.

She’s no Crushinator 3000, but this Industrial Frankenmech has become a crowd favorite on the county fair circuit.

- the misspelling of House Litzau’s homeworld as “Maldives” in the first two installments is corrected to Maldive, removing confusion as to whether the story was set on Maldive or Valdives.

I was kind of hoping it was a completely separate world from either of those. Heir Apparent makes a lot of references to the planet having seen a lot of fighting during what I assume is the Taurian-Canopian War of 2813-2814. But this doesn't make a lot of sense to me because Maldive is in Capellan space (even if it is independent), and is no where near the worlds the Concordant and Magistracy were fighting over! So how did Maldives get involved? I mean, I have no problem with them retroactively adding a fifth world the two fight over, but Maldive's location makes it a bit odd for that, IMO.

Highlighted the worlds the two nations were fighting over, as well as Maldive, some ~100ish LY away from the closest one. (The Aurigan Coalition/Directorate didn't exist at the time of the war, but this is the best map we have of the region).

My theory is that the Taurian Freedom Army built Litzau’s hidden base and other facilities on Maldive as secret staging bases from which to launch the Periphery Uprising. During the Uprising, Star League intel identified Maldive as a major TFA base, and they sent a division in to crush it, doing massive damage to the world in the process.

During the later Taurian Canopian War, Canopian salvage raiders hit the world and were repulsed by the founder of the Litzau dynasty.

Centuries later, due to destruction of records in the fighting, the two events are conflated in popular memory, something House Litzau doesn’t correct, because it enhances its own reputation.

Interesting to note - my PDF copy was Catastrophe Unlimited, but my E book format was Apparent Catastrophe - a duplicate of the previous novella. Little bit of a mix up, there.

That was really fun. Definite page turner, and I'd say it certainly solved the complaint about the previous one not having enough Mech on Mech action.

Just a shame there won't be any Agri/Industrial/Forestry mechs in the game.
