I come down before Paradox on my knees. When a Patrician or Doge or what have you has a sufficiently developed wine cellar (as shown in http://forum.paradoxplaza.com/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=69150&d=1355145050), an event chain alluding to the classic Poe story "The Cask of Amontillado" should be possible. The story is *SPOILERS* about an Italian noble who gets another noble drunk, then bricks him up in a wall of the cellar as revenge for some unspecified insult. I feel this would be a perfect flavor event or plot event for The Republic DLC, perhaps between rival leaders of Patrician families. If I were a better modder I'd make the chain myself, but alas I am not.

Nah, there weren't any Masons at the time.
People have got to stop asking for Renaissance and later themes in a distinctly Medieval game.
No Borgias or Barberinis.
No War of the Roses
No lavish masquerade balls (so this discounts Mask of the Red Death).

So? You don't have to have a whole-plot reference to the story. A plot that ends with your enemy walled up in your wine cellar would work just fine. Perhaps the button text for the final event could be "For the love of God, $CHARNAME$!" or however it works.
Besides, no one's asking for any of the other things (as far as I know of). In any case, we've already got references to Blackadder and the JFK assassination in the base game, so a reference to Edgar Allen Poe wouldn't be too horrible, would it?

There was no Amontillado before the eighteenth century either, if Wikipedia is to be believed.

JFK wasn't assassinated until the 21st century, yet the game contains references to that! I don't think it would be out of place, if the reference was kept sufficiently abstract.

:wacko:We have Sunset Invasion, and you're complaining about renaissance themes:wacko:
Holy hell, man.

As far as it goes, anyway, it's NOT renaissance themed.
Let's check off a list of what existed in 1066:
Wine? Check
Casks? Check
Bricks? Check
Mortar? Check
Masonry? Check
Insults? Check
Revenge? Check
Murder? Check

I don't see what the problem is. As long as it isn't a cask of Amontillado, and as long as it isn't set during a masquerade, historically accuracy is completely upheld.

I don't think membership in the Masons was crucial to the story, just that the man knew how to do masonry, possibly only crudely. I'm sure even I, with no prior experience, could lay brick and mortar well enough that a chained man couldn't break it.

Make it a cask of sherry if it makes you feel better though.

Dude, Columbus brought wine grapes back from California only in 1492.

Wine has been around since at least the Ancient Greeks. As I recall they drank it diluted with water because undiluted was seen as either unmanly or gluttonous or something.

There are so many things wrong with this statement.

Hm...

1) Colombus wasn't in California?
2) Colombus doesn't came back in 1492?
3) Wine are in Europe before Colombus was born?
4) Colombus doesn't bring wine grapes back to Europe

Hm... Are there more?

I also shoulda got the year wrong for a better effect.

The year was wrong. Colombus came back 1493.

I'm pretty sure Columbus brought grapes to Europe on his second journey and not his first. On the first journey they turned into raisins due to improper storage. And I don't think it was from California but Martha's Vineyard, MA.

Wine has been around since at least the Ancient Greeks. As I recall they drank it diluted with water because undiluted was seen as either unmanly or gluttonous or something.

Much earlier than that actually, wine originates from the Zagros Mountains in Northern Iran (Persia), where grapes were first cultivated and made into wine, it was then transported to Babylon, Anatolia, the Levant (Phoenician traders) and then finally to Greece where, as you said, it was considered uncivilized to drink undiluted wine, hence one reason why the Macedonians were considered barbarians because they drank their wine mostly undiluted.
