There's a very long history of desire for independence in the Cascadia region - so much so in fact, that the 1848 treaty which gave the US control of the Oregon Territory(which includes the vast majority of what modern secessionists think of when speaking of Cascadia) was made only with the unwritten understanding by both parties that the USA was to help the region develop its' own, independent, government. This was born out in letters written during the colonial period, and the US reneged on the agreement after their civil war, causing disgruntlement and unrest among the general populace which has continued into the modern day.
