Thanks for your answer on my comment. Very kind of you indeed. Obviously the latest DLC or some newer patch connected to it did introduce the bug.Unfortunately I can't hide my infuration about the present state of naval air warfare concerning carrier planes. If I'm not very much mistaken this aspect of HOI IV did work fine and dandy not to long ago. I find it therefore hard to understand, why the solution for this problem has to wait until the next DLC is released. This is In my view not only inacceptable long because naval air combat worked just fine a few months ago, but also for the simple reason that this part of the game is of substantial importance.

AFAIK 1.4.2 still works without this bug but the land AI is dumber there so there's a tradeoff. Also in 1.4.2 there's no obligatory faction auto-join which is a pro for me but GUI scaling in 1.4.2 is worse so there's another tradeoff.

Subs die like mayflies though, the only success I've had with them is spamming sub-3 and 4 late game. Even then they died in huge numbers.
The only way I have seen success is when you can get a Sea Wolf Admiral and a lot of subs.

I've had some great luck with subs as Japan. In one game my subs sunk over 1400 convoys with not too much loss. Seems as long as I have sea zone control they can do well, else opposing destroyers move in and can wreak havoc on subs. As Germany I had more trouble with subs since the allies have greater control of the sea zones.

Latest version of my mod uses .9 as a setting for this, otherwise carrier fighters are useless.

I have not been able to play a lot with the latest version though. Have not been on my computer this summer, were experiencing a heat wave in Scandinavia atm, my office has been 30c every night the last month, without having my computer on(and my AMD processor in it sure makes a lot of heat, FX 9590 with a TDP of 220w). Ohwell, the linings on the 22 new windows on my house needed painting too, so that's kept me occupied...

Any chance that this bug is solved before MTG?

As of now it's a nightmare to launch an over sea invasion against an enemy with a few NAVs since I'm bound to loose most of the screens and the carrier planes in the fleet I need to send to the sea zone in order to get the invasion going.

Or is there any way to "allow" sending the invasion force away with only massiv air cover in the sea zone?

If I'm not very much mistaken this aspect of HOI IV did work fine and dandy not to long ago.
The thing is that it was still bugged a few months ago, people just forgot.
Which is odd, because I was seeing some of this "all carrier wings wiped out" behavior before WtT. But only in CV vs CV combat (with both sides essentially getting wiped out when planes, doctrines, and leaders were roughly equal).

Thank you for this! Just got the game this weekend and worked most of the day to get a couple of carriers and aircraft with Australia, only to get my aircraft instantly wiped. Definitely a bit of a letdown as someone new to the game.

Just throwing my evidence into the pot here, with the aftermath of a naval battle from my latest US campaign:

Now, ignoring the fact that this battle was a total blowout for me, you can see that a handful of twin-engined medium bombers were able to shoot down over one hundred and fifty single-engined fighters, torpedo bombers and dive bombers. Are we sure that this is a bug, or could this just be a quirk of stats? I really hope that this is fixable because in previous playthroughs I've lost very expensive capital ships to land-based bombers despite having four carriers worth of tier four carrier planes covering my fleet. Very, very frustrating. It's ahistorical too, considering that every time land-based airpower has gone up against carrier-based airpower, the carrier airpower has won (the Mediterranean and Pacific theatres of the Second World War and the Falklands War of 1982).

This happened in my latest US game. All my carrier planes were destroyed on contact with Japanese planes. Though once I upgraded my planes this stopped happening. Also sailing close to mainland Japan got carrier wings decimated.

I had a similar experience from the opposing side. As Japan I started an early war with the US, and my carrier wings were decimated on first contact, yet the US suffered only very few (if any) air losses.
Same tier of airplanes, no significant difference in air doctrine, but I had a lead in naval (base strike) doctrine and favourable military advisors.

After some testing, I found my problem to be splitting of air wings (using multiple small wings instead of one large), which I'd done hoping to maximize ace bonuses.
However, five wings of 5 planes will be wiped almost instantly compared to one wing of 25 planes - I generally found that larger carrier wings were less likely to suffer casualties.
Those of you suffering from this "spontaneously igniting carrier planes" problem, are you also splitting air wings?

These days I exclusively run big air groups of just naval fighters on carriers, no torps or bombers. Casualties are much, much lower and they still sink ships. It's immersion breaking but simplifies my fighter production.

Some 64 naval bombers obliterated 172 cutting edge fighters AND another 150 naval bombers. Wtf. I have no mods installed.

So, this will be fixed only with the "man the guns"?

Apparently, as it would involve great changes to the underlying system. I believe they decided to start from scratch with MtG, as it would be a more efficient use of resources, and provide a better game experience.

Every naval encounter that includes enemy land based planes results in the loss of all my CAG. It ruined my game. Not to mention that I'll need to pay for the fix.
