Right, but your still not about to take on a 4 skull mission with a 1 skull lance...

You aren't about to take any mission you have less than a 10% chance of winning, on Ironman.
This is true, but that's because I'm a relatively average tactician and not completely nuts. Which is why I look at your playthroughs and marvel at your success before shaking my head and wondering why the RNG gods don't favor me like that :)

Being able to save gives you the freedom to do insane things for fun. You won't make a profit even if you win, but that's not the point. I often do it just to see if it can be done, considering surviving with 1 crippled mech as a victory. But in Ironman, that'd never be a victory, even at that kind of "best possible result".

This is what I mean. I do enjoy extreme challenge though, so I may be somewhat alone here...

I absolutely agree that having saves lets you do crazy things for fun. I was never attempting to claim that Ironman was 'the right way' to play the game. The Alt-F4 comment was, in fact, a joke. It works, but it doesn't feel good because it goes against the point of Ironman...and if you chose Ironman you really should respect the rules of Ironman.

There is NOTHING wrong with playing Career Mode with Ironman disabled. There. I said it. :)

Turning off Ironman in Career Mode will do ABSOLUTELY nothing with respect to the difficulty level of the opfor or the enjoyment that you get from game. The only thing it will do is use up disk space and, potentially, make it take longer to load the game because of all the saves. That's it.

I think it was called Marik Alliance.

Holy @#^%#$^ ... Yeah, the Alliance Flashpoints (for those that haven't watched the streams) are Flashpoints only available to you if you have an alliance (in the Reputation screen... "Ally With") with the house. They ARE HARD. I did the Davion Alliance and it was fun...and tough, but not super hard.

Now I have a reason to Ally with Marik, I guess. I want to try that Flashpoint.

**furiously grinds reputation with Marik**

Iron Man is just a option. For some it adds psychological tension. For others it adds nothing. It can be fun, or not depending on you.
Play how you best enjoy the game, don't let yourself worry about what others with differing tastes are doing. If you find something lacking, do be open to trying different difficulty options settings though as they can affect many aspects of the game for you.

If we are discussing how to get better, then no: Iron Man may not be the best training ground.
I'd say the long hours in beta I spent playing minimum tonnage versus maximum tonnage matches (4x lct-1v versus assaults, and 4x com-2d vs assaults were the most fun), and playing MP with strange non-optimal Lance configurations (oh that Victor), and the ideas from those that carried into my first play through did more to help me personally than anything else. Experiment. Handicap yourself. Overcome. Adapt.
And only if you enjoy it, play iron man.

one thing is facing 4 on 4.. and completely other facing 8 or 12 heavies+assaults while you have 4 mediums..
Point?

Many here have been doing this since the game dropped. ;):)

It's possible, and others can learn to do it too. If they want to. Or not. Their call.

I just find, as a counter point to this... if you have a lance that's capable of winning a 1 skull engagement and you see a 4 skull mission. The correct response with Ironman on is to not to bother trying. But without it, you can take on an impossible mission "just to see" how much you might be able to do on skills and prayer alone.

And in this you have defined the essence of the play style differences between us. Your playing a Battletech game, I am delving into the Battletech experience. I am focused on more an RPG element and so making good decisions for my company is paramount. I do take chances sometimes, going for the big score. Sometimes I win and some times I lose but by playing Ironman I always have accept the consequences of my choice.

You're both right.

That's why the options exist. So people can go the best route for them.
