I know this is going to sound like sacrilege to a lot of people here but I don't play with jump jets. I always remove jump jets when I get a mech that has them and replace them with armour and heat sinks. I also tend to drop any excess weapons as well. I prefer my mechs to run as cool as possible and to have as much armour as I can manage, that way I can keep up a high rate of fire turn after turn, generally while closing range, and then move in with melee attacks when I've built up too much heat. Although I do like LRMs I like to concentrate them on a specific fire support mech like a Catapult, and I will replace LRM's with SRMs on anything else.

Changes I've played around with:
  • Vindi: you can drop the PPC and go for ML spam + SRM6 for higher damage punch
  • Jenner: you can either drop the SRM for heat management OR focus more on the missiles and run a pair of SRMs in the CT (makes it a hit and run alpha build).
  • Panther: like the vindi, you can drop the PPC to make a close range damage build with 4xMLs and an SRM
  • Spider/Locust: meh? If you really need to use them much past the beginning, consider tweaking the armor up
If you do end up with a firestarter, cram 6 MG and 4 ML on it. Even without heat sinks, you can just grind away with MGs and melee if you get hot. It's the one light mech I hung onto after getting a full lance of mediums.

I like a rather odd dual SRM setup on the Jenner personally.
If you put both an SRM 2 and a SRM 4 in it's actually kind of cute because you can tune the heat generation very accurately by choosing which one to disable.

I got spammed with Jenners early on in the career I just started, I have 3 now. One is “standard” minus the SRM4 and with more armor. The 2nd is for hot planets and has 4 ML only 3 JJs (hot planets have a lot of cliffs) and more heat sinks, the 3rd has 10 SRMs 2 ML and no Jumpjets. All 3 are fun in their own different ways and shine on different maps. But the little missile spammer is probably my favorite. It’s really nasty in a flanking pair with a firestarter. I park the Panther and Vindy on a hill in trees with bulwark pilots and then flank hard with the jenner and firestarter, it’s quite effective. I just took down a BLK and TDR on the last mission I ran.
