This is an idea I have been thinking for quite some time already, and now I want to know what do you think about it.
Wouldn't it be great being able to set a (Big or even massive) ship to be your capital (in case you want to, and are capable of), this could have many benefits (Really good as a trading hub and could flee from the enemy in a war) as well as many disadvantages (It wouldn't be able to produce resources besides money and it would be a devastating blow to a nation's morale if it were destroyed).

So the idea is basically that, a flying city, some people have told me it is similar to Endless Space nomads, but I haven't played Endless Space.
Thanks for reading and I would really love to hear your opinion in the subject.

Ps: Sorry if there's any mistake with my english.

It's a fun idea, though I am not sure it fits into Stellaris from a game mechanics POV. However, they have mentioned super weapons as a patch or dlc item, and I suspect there might also be some other super structures, so maybe there is something in the same vein further down the dlc / patch line.

Paradox really needs to release a nomadic empire DLC down the road. This kind of thing would fit right into it.

Might be a good concept for Federations, with their rotating leadership.

Capitals *don't* have to be productive or large - their admin function is what makes them important.

You are right, however, In my opinion it should be able to do everything a common city does except resources extraction (duh) and it should even be able to grow on itself, expanding.
Or if you just want it to be a symbolic (admin) ship, it could be only that.

district 9 Bah. just a regular constructor ship. Big one.. hahaha!

oh and the ship capital kinda exists:

Military Dictatorship
  • Unlocked if:
    • Militarist
    • Fanatic Militarist
  • Locked if:
    • Individualist
    • Fanatic Individualist
  • Fleet Size Limit: +10
  • Ship Upkeep: -10%[2]
  • Can build an oversized ship
  • Admirals/generals are eligible for rulership
This government is a militaristic form of autocracy, with the ruler serving as the undisputed head of the military which is firmly in control of the state apparatus. Grand Marshal

And with taking the Mugani? HAK HAKHAK tech your capital ship will be organic, self-aware, intergalactic and likely able to harvest resources (energy, mineral, science..) on its own. And you can go nomadic.

I don't think that the fact that it's oversized makes it capable of being what i'm describing here (and I repeat, I have kept myself away from information and streamings just to not be over-hyped)

A capital would about command and control from a military and bureaucracy standpoint. Also, there would be considerations from a type of government. AIt would be more acceptable from a POP perspective it was for an authoritarian state. An open "free" state would probably be more upset with their leaders in an 'ivory tower'.....

Just throwing out possible considerations....

also, in game terms what would it accomplish....seems cosmetic.

I don't see how either of those 'benefits' are benefits. A trading hub that moves is a bad thing - if you never know where it's going to be, how can you load up your space caravan and go visit it? And even if you do know where it's going to be, having to change your route and fuel payload every time you travel to it would be a logistical nightmare. No, this is nothing but bad for trade. As for retreating from the front in a war... it's not exactly good propaganda, is it, if every time someone attacks you your empire just scurries away, running from a fight?

On the plus side, your English was fine.

As regards the commerce I was thinking that it would build up over time until it reached a certain maximum, it would be like a moving trading node, for merchants it would be horrible if it changed locations all the time, but if it didn't and if the position in which the ship stoped was good enough merchants would (or at least from my point of view) gradually see benefit from this, and lets say you colonized a remote planet with a really valuable and strange resource, placing your ship close to that planet would allow more merchants to commerce with that planet since this (in my head huge) ship would have a really big docking capacity and would be (or at least it should) safer to trade than a mining colony.

On the other hand, reatreating your capital from war surely isn't good propaganda, yet it's better than losing your capital completely and (although this might not be my final opinion since I haven't thought this pretty much) I believe only the capital should be a ship, planets should still be colonized.

Any way you are welcome to probe my razoning wrong, since that is one of the reazons I made this thread.
Glad that at least my english isn't that bad.

Obviously they need to make the capital mobile as they search for the sacred rings/planets so that the entire empire can travel their Divine Journey when the time comes. Or something like that. Can't think of any example alien race that would have a mobile capital :)

I have some ideas:
- Once had a capital planet but became unhabitable (due either to internal or external action) so they had to leave and (in case they had colonies) the government didn't want to settle on any of the colonies

- A group of citizens was expelled from a planet and they became nomads

- A big corporation grew so big that they became a commercial empire and instead of having a static homeworld they decided it was best to have a commerce vessel capable of administrative work

- A mad emperor fealt that being on the same place all the time would be the end of him

And i'm sure I can come up with more

I was actually referencing the Covenant, but those are good ideas too :)

I'm sorry to disagree, I stated what I though would be advantages and disadvantages of this, making it more than just cosmetic

from a general standpoint I could see what you are saying. I am talking about game mechanics in stellaris....I don't see how it would affect the current trade capabilities in Stellaris and also a capital standpoint...how would it affect the game in its current format?

I approve of any addition to the game that makes it easier to mod the Quarian fleet!

it's not exactly good propaganda, is it, if every time someone attacks you your empire just scurries away, running from a fight?

Well sure, not great propaganda for your average human. But we can't expect all aliens to think the same, can we?
Fanatic Pacifist is a thing in Stellaris after all - they might consider it a point of honor to cause as little harm as possible, on either side.
