Hmm, apparently one of the new screenshots on facebook has yet another portrait set: is this the Russian portrait set, or something else entirely (because those guys are Scandinavians)?
I'm assuming that you can pick them normally like you can pick vassals of an emperor/king/duke in the character selection menu, it's just you can't directly click on them in the map. I think.

I think those are just the unique Republican graphics for that particular cultural group.

It's probably shared between Scandinavia and the Rus considering how closely linked the Rurikovich are, with both intermarriages and rather close Norse ancestors.

On a related note, and especially to other modders, do you guys have any idea how the new Republican clothes will work? It seems like they'll be plastered on to any bloke in a Republic, but does that mean the vanilla clothes sets will also be changed to accomodate the new ones?

While the mechanics of running a republic and a typical feudal lordship are different from each other, strictly speaking it would take a succession law change from a long-time (kinda) Open Elective to one of the standard laws to put it on a similar level of approximation as e.g. baron-count-duke-king level chieftains (where western chivalric feudalism is simply not the social order). The main difference being that those guys would be living and ruling in mostly urban areas with their nobility not holding country estates (thought that too) as much as being burgher elites (rich merchants, guild members).

Are all republics going to be mercantile? If not, will they all be playable?

I'm guessing that all Republics will use the same mechanics, but land-locked ones won't be able to build trading posts. And I very much doubt India will be included.
