Screenshot of the technology interface seems like an odd choice. What am I supposed to be getting from that?

I might be wrong, but I think it is showing that the map will show relative technology levels of provinces when tech-interface is open (in the same way that the religion tab shows the patriarchates for orthodox players) Pisa is a brighter shade than other neighbouring provinces. (and none of the tech-specific buttons look like they are pressed)

Presumably because you might want to know where is advanced enough to make building trade posts useful?

I figured that was just relations mode.

As for the actual patch, I just hope Paradox have bothered to link up all of the Italian names.

Trade trumps bloodline in this latest expansion, as players will experience a whole new style of game based on playing as the head of a Patrician family of in one of the great Merchant Republics.

Not to be nitpicky, Petra, but how to tell you... ;)

It would be nice if Cumans, Poles, Spanish, and various Muslim people got a facelift, too. Although, a Celtic people DLC would be cool.

Poles are okay with the current set. From late 15-16th century onward you'd see different clothing styles but within 1066-1453, it should be pretty much the same as the core that works everywhere. Surviving post-Visigothic Spanish nobility wouldn't be that much different, unlike perhaps the general populace. Small-scale, I think there could be visible differences between Longobardic Italians and the rest but even Spartenos Greeks from Naples possibly wouldn't look the "dark and handsome" way we'd imagine in 21st century. :) Thus the way things currently are is good IMHO.

Edit: Ooh and just because I'm cheeky: Patrician is an Italian title of nobility. In theory, it's below cavaliere but above a simple nobile. Napoleon's father had the title. Some European rulers would list patricianship of Venice or Genoa or some other powerful republic after the lordships in their lists of titles (e.g. the Savoys did). It was very hereditary. :p

How moddable are the new mechanics going to be? Can we make merchant republics that have less than 5 families? Can we make them inland? Can we make them out of only a sub-county city?

EDIT: Can we, as Doge, usurp the republic and become hereditary feudal lords?

I must say I'm interested to see the effects of this DLC on the balance of the game, with Pisa now independent and Pisa and Genoa as king-tier nations, not to mention Swedish dominatin in the Baltic (and really - an Aztec sun as the Gotland CoA?, is Gotland so ahistorical that they even brag about it?). Not to mention the increased wealth of the republics, and their new armies and fleets.

As a side note: it seems that republics are immune to factions, at least on Duchy level.
