I usually try get non-agression pacts going with as many neighbors as possible, maybe a Defensive one, and see how far I can go with peaceful expansion. Rival someone everyone hates, it's very effective. It also gives you more influence for expanding!

Try have a really strong economy, expand a lot! Make sure everyoneone else hates/does coalition vs someone else before showing your true colors. :D

Early on, before fleet power gets around 1.5k, you're fine just putting starports everywhere, but building some 10-20 corvettes just for the Space Pirates and to discourage some other neighbor is good!

Avoid developing into rockets, they're currently awful, both slow, AI loves point defense, they overkill like crazy and waste time/damage. Both Kinetic and Energy have good alternatives! I never deployed Carriers, so I'm not sure how good they are. But we usually win by a landslide against those. We don't bother much with Point Defense, but found Cruisers with nothing but Flak Cannons to be nice!

Shield the small ships, and for big ships, Armor up to 60-80% then shield them up with the rest. ^_^ Armor on the tiny ships is quite wasteful.

TLDR Find a common enemy for the AI's to team up on, before you are the common enemy, don't use rockets, Kinetic murders shields, Energy murders armor, Destroyers murder small ships, Battleships murder everything else.
