Logged into steam, it downloaded the patch. The menu screen comes up and I can hit play. Then the game shows up on the task bar, the music starts playing, but the game screen never comes up.

If that doesn't work - are any logs generated while starting the game? (in [documents]/Paradox Interactive/Hearts of Iron IV/logs ) ?
I figured out what the issue was, and I don't think its related to the new patch. Normally I have my laptop plugged into my monitor via HDMI. My monitor's resolution is 2048x1152. Today I was out and started up the game on my laptop's display. Its resolution is 1900x1200. When I got home and plugged into my monitor again the game loaded just fine.
The game needs to default to the smallest resolution if it cannot render to prevent this in the future. I'm going to edit the thread title to make this thread more accurate.
