Can't seem to join a multiplayer game. What am I doing wrong?

Every time I try and join a multiplayer game, I get this:

This happened on both the beta and vanilla games. It's leaving me scratching my head. I assume that it's me doing something odd, given that everyone else seems to be doing just fine?

I mean, I'm not really in a hurry to get my ass handed to me, but even so...

Yup, started a game with a friend, but he's been having heat issues with his PC and he got a spike that alarmed him so he had to quit.

Nope, no mods at all.

I've been having the same issue all day long. Comstar needs to clean the HPG's or something!
