Hello,

I'm a relative newb at this game, so please be easy. Been playing for about 6 months and have read the paradoxian eu3 wiki fairly thoroughly.

I have a question on alliances though. I cannot seem to make any meaningful ones with countries that are (approximately my peers). Currently, I playing as Connacht. It's just shy of 1600 (wanna say 1594 to be exact). I've united Ireland, become a trading power and am on the verge of becoming a colonial power (I have occupied a fair amount of the "real world" U.S.) but i have no meaningful alliances. The papl state and Brabant offered (an I accpreted). France has yet to explode into the big blue blob, so I'd love to add them before I do. Britain has been form and is guaranteeing my independence so they seem like they'd be a decent choice as well. However, both of those countries say "impossible" when I ask for an alliance. Additionally, the only country that was even a "Maybe" was the Huron before I conquered them. Some military support would be nice.

Is there anything I'm doing wrong/should be doing to secure alliances?

Countries with which you have negative relations will never accept an alliance offer.
Countries that already have 3 non-vassel allies will (almost) never accept an alliance offer.
Countries that have cores on you or other plausible reasons to attack you in the near future will rarely accept an allience offer.
If you happen to lose an alliance for some reason - leaving you with less than 3 allies - other countries may send you alliance offers.
Watch out for the reformation - countries that embrace the heretic faith tend to forge new alliances with their new religious brethren very eagerly.
Being at war with a rival country of a country you have positive relations with may result in an alliance offer from that country.

Edit: Oh Nevermind, this is DW advice.

And register it, that always seems to help!

As far as your current game, you have to make sure you have high relations in most cases before you ally as well. If you've had long periods of high infamy, it's likely that few nations will still be on good terms with you. What relations do you have with these potential allies, and how much infamy do you usually have?
