Hello. My friend is trying to play with me online but he can't join any game, and does not even have a refresh internet button.

  • Launcher shows no DLCs and Main Menu content-button is greyed out.
    • Steam properties list all the DLCs he have as installed.
    • DLC-files are in the DLC folder of installation.
  • Trying to connect to id gives "could not connect". (we have the same version, checksum, and steam build id)
  • Button "Refresh Internet" is gone in the multiplayer window.
  • Multiplayer lists no servers at all.
  • DLC-content is inactive (can't launch game from Old Gods year)

We have tried:
  • Restarted Steam.
  • Run vcredist.exe
  • Completely Removing Crusader Kings (Steam uninstall, Remove folders), and reinstalling.
  • Verified Cache
  • Added Exclusions to avast.


Activating "beta" of older version, makes launcher look fine.

Please have him try a full clean re-install:

- move any valued save games elsewhere
- "delete local content" in Steam-CK2
- manually delete all files and folders left under Steam/CK2 AND Documents/Paradox/CK2
- re-install game in Steam, run a Steam Verify when done.
- make sure he has Steam Cloud Sync enabled for this game

Steam Cloudsync is turned on, and the process you described we have tried 2 times.

For clarity we tried it once more.
Here is the exact process we followed.
  1. Closed steam entirely.
  2. Started steam as Admin.
  3. In steam, remove local content.
  4. Ensured that ...steam/steamapps/Crusader Kings II was gone.
  5. Removed ...documents/Paradox Interactive.
  6. Completely disabled all antivirus protection. (Avast)
  7. In steam, Install Crusader Kings II
  8. Without trying to run this time, Verifying Cache (successfully)
  9. Prayed to the lord (+10 piety)
  10. (try to) start the game.

Launcher is still empty.

As I stated earlier. Using "beta" to run an older version, makes the launcher find all DLCs just fine. There is clearly something that broke in an update.

Both overall in Steam, AND for this game in particular?

Have him try a re-install with Steam refresh:

- move any valued save games elsewhere
- "delete local content" in Steam-CK2
- exit Steam
- manually delete all files and folders left under Steam/CK2 AND Documents/Paradox/CK2
- manually delete everything in the Steam folder EXCEPT steam.exe and the /SteamApps/ folder (note this may lose some games' user settings)
- manually run steam.exe to rebuild everything in there
- re-install game in Steam, run a Steam Verify when done.

If that still fails, Please post a dxdiag.txt (you can delete everything after the end of the "Sound devices" section for brevity) and your Documents/CK2/settings.txt. From your Documents/Paradox/CK2/logs/ directory, post system.log . Open setup.log in notepad and search for 'checksum', post that line only here too please.

I'm having the same problem. I honestly don't know what went wrong though.
  • History
    • Played MP with friend last two evenings
    • Using checksum BTOF
    • No problems except a few minor sync issues
  • Problems Today
    • Both still using BTOF version
    • Content Button on main menu greyed out on my end
    • Save to Cloud option greyed out
    • No internet links work on main menu (buttons at bottom right, ad banner etc)
    • Community tab is greyed out in MP menu
    • I try to accept Steam game invite but it claims we are using different versions...

  • Thoughts
    • All problems listed are on my end.
    • I've read and know the steps to try fix, but I'm just really curious as to what could have changed since the last time I played with them...
    • It's definitely not a connection problem - I was in a Skype call with them and my Steam overlay was working, and I could still talk to online friends.

Any ideas?

Can't remember the version #, but as I said in the post:

Both still using BTOF version

I'm fairly sure we were both using 2.3. Regardless, the problem is on my end - I can't access any online features. I'll just go and double check to see if I have the same problems today.

EDIT:

Ok, no problems today. Still version 2.3 and BTOF, but I can click on the ad banner again, and the Content button is no longer greyed out. I go to multiplayer and the community tab is functioning as normal. Any possible reasons why none of this was working yesterday?

We've changed nothing in the game in that time, so it can only be some local problem - network, ISP, something like that. You're not in North Korea, are you? :)
