I just recently bought this game on steam while it was on sale and since then I have been unable to play the game at all. Every time I launch the game it freezes at the "Loading Graphics" screen. It used to freeze right after loading but I bypassed that by changing the settings to skip the "Asking your language screen", but now it freezes on this screen instead. I have looked everywhere for a fix but have found nothing.

I am running Windows XP SP3

If someone could help me out that would be great.

That looks fine. In your Steam client run the Verify option until it finds nothing to fix. If that doesn't help please try installing:

If that still doesn't help, please post your CK2 settings.txt, system.log and error.log files (you'll need to rename the .log files to .txt to upload). Also open setup.log, search for "checksum", and paste that line only in here.

It looks like that you are on an outdated version.

Could you go to your steam library, right click on Crusader Kings II, select properties and go to the "Betas" tab. There in the dropdown menu you select "None - Opt out of all betas", Steam should start downloading however it may be good to also verify the integrity of the game cache to be sure.

  • Open your Steam games library
  • Right click on "Crusader Kings II" and select "properties"
  • Click on the tab "Local Files"
  • Now click on "Verify integrity of game cache"
  • Wait until this process is finished, if any files are missing/corrupted it will notify you at the end of the process and automatically start with redownloading these files

Let me know if updating to an updated version of the game fixed the problem for you.

Hmm, weird however that that did not solve it.

Next thing I'd like to advise is to do a full clean installation.

  • Important: Go to '..\Documents\Paradox Interactive\Crusader Kings II\save games\' and copy all the save games you want to keep outside the folder
  • Uninstall Crusader Kings II
    For Steam users: uninstall the game from within steam by right clicking on the game and select "Delete content".
  • Go to the folder where you installed Crusader Kings II in, and check if the Crusader Kings II folder is removed. If not, delete the entire folder
    For Steam users: Installation folder can be found at: '..\Steam\SteamApps\common\'
  • Go to '..\Documents\Paradox Interactive\' and remove the entire Crusader Kings II folder
  • Reinstall the game, make sure you install the game outside the 'C:\Program Files\' or 'C:\Program Files (x86)\' folders, as it can cause issues with permissions

Some errors like that are normal. Find ck2.exe and ck2game.exe under your Steam folder, right-click on each and set them to run as the Admin user, and to disable Desktop Composition.

Just to be clear - you did all that stuff again, since the re-install? Did it all seem to go OK, to install or update stuff?

If you run dxdiag again and go through all the tests in each tab, does dxdiag.txt now not say "The file nv4_disp.dll is not digitally signed, etc" and not say "DxDiag Previously: Crashed in system information (stage 4)" as it did above? (I was a bit quick to say it looked fine ...)
