In my current game where I am playing a Gestalt Cons I helped a robot empire when it rebelled against its masters. It became my protectorate. Now it is pretty big (I gave it like 1/3 of the galaxy through tributes). However, I cant seem to invite them to any of my wars, as there is no such option. Furthermore, they dont seem to close borders to other AI empires (even though they are Determined exterminators). So whenever there is a war between myself and other empires, they can just send their ships through any of my protectorate's systems without being attacked. That means I have to keep fully stacked citadels near my borders with my protectorate.

Sure, maybe protectorates are not meant to be "put in harm" by entering them in wars. But in that case the protectorate status should not be tied to the technology, but instead the mere strength. Besides, where in comparison to my empire they are pathetic, they are equal or even better than any other empires. So it would make sense if they could go to war on my whim with them.
