hi all-

I'm currently playing England in the Grand Campaign, and have a slight problem. I want to go bankrupt (to clear my 5 loans @ 500 each and to reset my inflation) but my economy is so strong that even with the budget set with "To Treasury" all the way to the left and with a whole 0 ducats in my treasury, I can't go bankrupt :( . I do have 4 loans due in a three-month period, but there doesn't seem to be any way to renege on them. I've tried rolling them over to raise my interest payments, but that just reduces what gets spent on research so I don't go bankrupt. I've tried ignoring the reminders, but then it just automatically rolls them over. The booklet talks about reneging, but it seems to be impossible. How do I do it?

Eeeh, don't go bankrupt. U won't lose any inflation, u will gain 25%. :D

So, pay off those loans asap and get to infra lvl 5 and promote governors in ur provinces to decrease the inflation. :)

I already have Infra 5 allowing Govs. I arranged things so that Land, Naval, and Infra all capped within a year of each other. I just beat Portugal in a war, gaining Goa and Imb... in SE Africa (complete with a trade center).

Going bankrupt is supposed to cut inflation in half and will get rid of my five 500d loans (four due is a three-month window). According to the rulebook, "You must declare national bankruptcy is your country has five unpaid loans and you ... cannot repay one of them on the due date" but instead the game automatically extended the loans, raising interest payments considerably.

A century into the game, I have as many VPs as Spain and Portugal (numbers 2 and 3 respectively) combined. I can easily handle a well-timed bankruptcy, if only the game would let me.:D

Patch 1.04 or something changed the inflation from bankrupcy from a reduction to a large increase to prevent exploitation.

But as you say, having governors and plenty of empty city provinces can allow you to bankrupcy w/o penalty.

To go bankrupt you have to have five loans and need to take out a sixth, just having five loans and timing them out isn't enough, so once you are too rich it can be hard to bankrupcy.

Take five loans, spend all your money and make sure you loose money every month and you should get what you desire :)

Granted, it's been a looooooooooooooooooong time since it was released. :D

Ok, I don't know the exact patch No., but I'm pretty sure that the manual and the tip at startup were right at some moment in time, and that it was later changed (just as demanding money for peace was capped and BB-wars introduced) to prevent exploitation.

I've given up trying to go bankrupt, since there wasn't any way the game was going to let me. It seems odd to me, though, that you can't do something that the rules say you can do, that minors are doing, and that historically was rather common (Spain went bankrupt 3 times in Philip II's reign alone). I wish I had known 5-10 years earlier in the game, and I wouldn't have planned that way.

My general strategy as England has been economy, trade, and colonies. I still own Calais (two wars with France: first time I got money, second time a TP in Canada). But the real reason I'm winning against the AI is that it's horrid at picking missions. So far I've got 999 VPs from those, while Spain and Russia are tied for second at something like 173. That more than accounts for my lead of some 670 over Spain.

Suggest you turn missions off. Too much advantage for the human vs AI. Makes the game too easy.

Instead use your own quasi-historical missions, eg for England:
1. colonise North America
2. colonise India
3. colonise SE Asia
4. make the Scots pay homage to the real King (or Queen, god bless ER)
5. find Australia first
6. colour France red
etc etc etc

1-3 are well underway, as I'm used to the board game and want a large colonial empire before the Civil War hits. I suppose I'm sure to run into that here as well? As for the Scots, I think Arthur was still heir when I dip annexed them:D .

We'll have to see about 5. Most of my 'exploration' has come from stealing French and then Portugese rudders  or exchanging knowledge with the Iroquois and Mysore. As for France, well...
