Can't get CK2 going

I registered just so I could complain about this. Where am I supposed to install

(If that doesn't do anything then http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/downl...s.aspx?id=8109 )

What am I supposed to do once that is installed? I thought I was supposed to install it in \Steam\steamapps\common\crusader kings ii\DX\, then run dxsetup.exe, but that didn't work.

I downloaded and installed these

as well and still nothing is fixed. The game will not boot, I rolled back to 2.0.4 beta and while the launcher appeared, the game still would not run. I did get an error message once about Visual C++, but how is that possible if I already followed your exact instructions to fix Visual C++, Paradox?

EDIT: Here is a screenshot of Programs and Features I have. Look at all this garbage and tell me what I should and should not have to run CK2.

It's not cool to jump in on someone else's thread, so I've moved you to your own.

You weren't specifically supposed to install anything to \Steam\steamapps\common\crusader kings ii\DX\. Rather, that is a folder that already exists with stuff in it, and my instructions say to run dxsetup.exe from that folder; if and only if that doesn't get CK2 going for you then you would then download and install the stuff from those next 3 links; where you download the installer files to doesn't matter at all - the desktop will do. As long as you then run the installers and apply their updates.

If you've run all those 5 steps without success, then you have some other, quite unusual, issue, I'm not sure just what as yet. Please post a dxdiag.txt (you can delete everything after the end of the "Sound devices" section for brevity) and your Documents/CK2/settings.txt. From your Documents/Paradox/CK2/logs/ directory, post system.log . Open setup.log in notepad and search for 'checksum', post that line only here too please.

- move any valued save games elsewhere
- "delete local content" in Steam-CK2
- manually delete all files and folders left under Steam/CK2 AND Documents/Paradox/CK2
- re-install game in Steam, run a Steam Verify when done.
- click Play in Steam Library

Those missing files probably mean that the Documents folder has been moved in your Windows installation, but not using the Microsoft approved way. I've seen taht before.

To test this, make a file in the Steam/SteamApps/common/CK2 folder with notepad called userdir.txt . In that file just place a single dot (period, full stop). This tells the game to create the user files in that same Steam/CK2 directory instead of under Documents. If that works you can just replace the dot with the file path of the place you've moved Documents to (eg e:\documents\paradox\ck2\ or whatever).

That solution worked exactly! I recently had to move the documents to a new hard drive, I assumed setting a new target for Documents would point the game to the different drive.
