Playing the Empire of Ireland, I wanted to create trade companies, but I get 'Your Technology Group does not allow for Trade Companies'. Of course, Ireland is in the western technology group. Do I get this, because this is a converted game from CK2?

You do get this because it is an issue with the converter which overwrites "technology.txt" in the "common" folder.
Go to your mod folder (probably looks like this: documents\Paradox Interactive\Europa Universalis IV\mod\Converted_XYZ\common), open the file technology.txt and then add the line "trade_company = yes" to this block:
western = {
modifier = 0
start_level = 3
cav_to_inf_ratio = 0.5
}
restart the game and all should work.

I'm having the same problem (playing as Scandinavia, Western tech group, own nearly all of several trade company regions, getting the same message), but when I go to the mod folder you mentioned, it's completely empty. I tried copying and pasting the regular technology.txt file into the folder, but still had the issue. The only thing I can think of that's different from ebs' situation is that I have Norse culture and religion, but that still doesn't explain why the mod folder is empty. Should I bug report this?

Edit: Actually, I figured it out. I had to go to my Crusader Kings folder instead of my EUIV folder, and I found the mod and the file under the eu4export folder. Now the companies are working fine.
