I can't choose the "Defender of the Faith" casus belli against Ottoman, although I am Defender of the Faith, have Deus Vult, and various tool-tips in the game say that I have the CB. Are there any other conditions that need to be met for being able to use the DotF CB?

Deus Vult is the Holy War CB and is separate from the DoTF

To be honest I didn't know there was a DoTF CB, but maybe it just is the Holy War CB?

There is also a DotF CB, inaddition to Holy War. The DotF is quite useful, for example, you can demand Return Core without Dip cost, which is exactly what I'm trying to do in my game - feed my Mamluks vassal with their cores in Ottoman territory.

For a while, the DotF CB was available in my game when declaring war, but now it it not available any more, even though all the tool-tips say that I have this CB against Ottomans (and other nations).

Forgive me if I'm mistaken, but I do believe Deus Vult remains available throughout the game but doesn't the DotF CB function stop around 1600?

If the DotF does expire I think it would be in 1650 as that's when the crusade and excommunication stuff expires (as of 1.7 at least, I assume it's the same for AoW).

DotF CB expiring at some date is a possibility, yes, but I remember it was still available a few game-years ago - if has expired, then that would have happened just around 1640, and that is (afaik) not a year in which any religious features become unavailable. Also, if it has indeed expired, the DotF CB should not be listed in the tool-tips any more. Edit: I became DotF long after 1600, so that can't really be the expiry date.

I think you can be DotF throughout for the regular bonus, just certain religious CB's do expire at some point

Hmm. Where would that expiry date be stated, then? I didn't see it on the Wiki. In the game file common/cb_types/00_cb_types.txt, there is
Code:
# Defender of the Faith
cb_defender_of_the_faith = {
        valid_for_subject = no

        prerequisites = {
                is_defender_of_faith = yes
                is_neighbor_of = FROM
                NOT = { religion = FROM }
                cb_on_religious_enemies = yes
                is_revolution_target = no
        }

        war_goal = defend_country_faith
}
which does not mention a best-before date. The cb_on_religious_enemies condition seems to be satisfied, as I do have the Holy War CB, which likewise has this condition.

The war goal "defend_country_faith", defined in common/wargoal_types/00_wargoal_types.txt,
Code:
defend_country_faith = {
        type = defend_country

        allowed_countries = {
                religion = ROOT
        }

        badboy_factor = 1
        prestige_factor = 2
        peace_cost_factor = 0.75

        po_release_vassals = yes
        po_release_annexed = yes
        po_return_cores = yes
        po_revoke_cores = yes
        po_gold = yes
        po_concede_defeat = yes

        allow_leader_change = yes

        war_name = DOF_WAR_NAME
}
does not mention any expiry date, either.

Are they are war with a tag of your faith? IIRC the DotF CB is only usable when you're intervening to defend a tag against the aggressor (normally you should be called in when hostilities break out, but if you got the title after the war had already broken out, this should be applicable).

CBs can't be used to intervene in a war. The only possible intervention is through Enforce Peace.

Hm, I think I'm getting what Path is saying... maybe the DotF CB is meant to be used against a nation A who is already in a war against a nation B of your faith. If you'd been the DotF when A declared war on B, then B would have called on you to defend them, but if you became the DotF only after that war started, then - and only then - can you use the DotF CB against A? Is that how it works?

If so, then that should be documented more clearly, and the tool-tips should not show you having the DotF CB against nations where this CB can't actually be used.

Not intervening in the war itself as, indeed, that isn't possible, but you can go to war with the tag in the name of defending the target tag from religious persecution (which is what the CB is all about IIRC). The last time I had it available was when I, as Protestant Sweden, was declaring war on Catholic France, and they were already in a war against, among others, a Protestant OPM. Frankly the CB is so rare that I'm not entirely sure if this is how it works, but from what I remember having seen it, it makes sense. It's certainly not something you can use on a regular basis, unlike the regular religious CBs. Unlike the other religious CBs, DotF is strictly defensive in nature (claim revocations, reparations etc).
