I don't really agree with the decision to lock in the aquatic trait to your pops after you pick the hydrocentric trait, but whatever.

But what's really annoying is that you can't ADD the aquatic trait to any new species you add to your empire!

Worse, if you had a non-aquatic subspecies of your main species for some reason, those pops can now never become aquatic. Why???

Just let us freely mod the trait and move on. Ya'll are being pretty unreasonable with these unmoddable traits IMO. It's like your programmers spent all that time coming up with a way to make traits unmoddable so now you're just looking for excuses to use it to justify the effort.

You have to take the evolutionary ascension path to add aquatic. I agree that that Hydrocentric should allow it to be gene modded on.

Anything that lets my psionic church turn more people into fish should be allowed

Oh I have the bio ascension path. I'm a hivemind, it was my only option. Ironically I was entirely able to add and remove the aquatic trait BEFORE I took hydrocentric, so I have a number of subspecies who lack the trait, and I can't morph a subspecies with the trait into a species without it or vice-versa. It's extremely annoying.

Weird. Apparently, it is supposed to be possible to add or remove the Aquatic trait if you have Evolutionary Mastery (not just Engineered Evolution), but it becomes impossible to remove it if you have Hydrocentric...

Do you have the bug only on subspecies?
Do they have Ocean Preference? (I don't know if that matters?)

This change for unmoddable traits, while it make sense in itself, has been done without a thought for the absolute trash that is the specie tab and species management.
I understand that psionic shouldn't be applicable via gene modification, but it can create really annoying situations. This also make irrelevant traits gain from anomaly, such as brainslugs, orbital speed demon traits, and the tomb world hability from the Worm.
I know that Custodian and regular devs are quite busy atm, but I really hope they will address this issue rapidly and hopefully work on a species management overhaul. This tab is... A monument to the glory of bad design
