So I am an authoritarian government (non-xenophobic) with a caste system.

I then went to select the species rights and thought they might make wonderful battle thralls. Unfortunately I don't seem to be able to select it for a reason marked "Affected pops are slaves"...

How do I get around this? What am I missing? Is it the stellar culture shock or something? :(

Dude, post and wait, people are not always in the forums, and this is something of a just released DLC, most people won't know the answer either.

Now, I'm guessing it's a bug, but don't quote me on it either.

The problem is that you're not xenophobes. In order to make a species battle thralls or livestock, they need to be fully slaves, not just in a caste system. The only way you can make them fully slaves is to be xenophobic.

You need Full Slavery to use Battle Thralls and Lifestock Slavery Types.
Only Xenophobes have full Slavery avalible.

Note that you do still get Slave Armies with the Neural Implats Technology.
They are quite cheap to build and maintain and before 1.5 I even tended to use them as "mobile Garission" Force. I could build so many, I could simply let them be stationed on the planets they conquered. As future garission.

Note that Non-Defense armies are limited in Number to the number of Pops of a species.
