I really enjoy the changes that were made in Waking the Tiger but one change that I am not liking is the new battle plan system. We all agree that planning bonus is very important for offensive operations, but in order to get it, you need to assign it to the AI.

Thing is, I like to manually control my wars. Not that I am on a crusade against the AI, but I like to play it like I played HOI 2 and 3. I mean, Barbarossa was the greatest military operation in history, planning and logistics took a lot of effort, so I like to emulate that in my games, whereas most people simply drag a line and put the war on speed 5.

But now I can't even manually control it. Back then, I used to select every group of divisions and assign them a one province front line, a one province offensive for the planning bonus and then delete the orders when I launch the offensive. With the new Chain of Command System, the only way that you can place your units wherever you want is to have different commanders for each unit. That means that I cannot put 3 divisions on province A and 4 divisions on province B, I can only put, say, my tanks on province B but I will need different commanders for each province, otherwise the AI will simply merge all of those one province frontlines and then move my divisions wherever it wants.

I just started a campaign as Italy and I am invading Ethiopia. As you all know, Ethiopia is all mountains, except for a desert province in the north-east. I am trying to amass my offensive force there, but the AI keeps moving my troops back into the mountains. MOUNTAINS!!! In this HOI game, one does not simply attack mountains, that is how bad the AI is.

I understand that the merger of front lines makes things easier for the *cough* casuals *cough*, but there should be an option for veterans of the series. They keep spitting on the eyes of everyone who likes manual control. I can live with the fact that we no longer get combat pop ups so I can be alerted at all time, but this now is totally stripping away my control.

I know that I am not asking too much, this was in the code before, so just create an option to bring it back. Also, since we're here, pop ups... I don't know how people never complained about this, but you could be doing something on the west, and without your knowledge, the AI has messed up, there is a break through, and now all of your troops are surrounded. They have put the popups on the "Combat Log", so I suppose it is not that difficult to make it POP UP!! PLZZZZZ

PS. I do have the game on steam, but it does not show here for some reason.

if you want to fully play manually you can. if you want the bonus you can plan, then hit ctrl+H (sorry memory is in my fingers not head if I got it wrong) to disconnect from the plan and then play manually with the bonus on as they wont follow the order then

I know that, but still, I cannot place my divisions where I want. The AI is attrocious at placing divisions where they should. If I want 10 divisions to be at province A and 4 at province B, the AI will move 3 divisions from A to B.

I know the planning bonus stays if your press Ctrl-H, but the thing is, what's the point of manually controlling your army when you cannot mass your troops wherever you want, all of them. The AI will do something stupid, guaranteed. Also, if I let the planning bonus increase and then move my troops, the bonus will decrease.

Guys, this is important. Planning bonus is needed for blitzing. They need to add in some form of manual control, and it cannot be that hard so why not do it?

Don't forget you can have more than one frontline for each army (or could last time I tried this at least) - so if you want a specific set of divisions in one province, have a one-province frontline with those divisions assigned. It's a bit fiddly, but seems proportionately fiddly to the amount of control you want. Sorry if I've completely missed the point, and good luck with this :).

Is there a reason why you lose the bonus 8 times as fast if you delete the plan as if you simply hit ctrl+H and de-assign them from plans?

I don't see how it makes sense since in either case you control both fully manual.

That's what I used to do before the patch. But now, with the patch, the AI merges all of the one province frontlines under the same generals. It is impossible to keep the one province frontlines individualized.

I was fine before the patch. And no, I am not reversing back, I like the other changes they made, like the production UI. This is simple, just turn off the AI but there is no way to do that and get the planning bonus.

Right you are! Sorry about that, it's early here, and I haven't had a chance to play the new release. Just had a look then, though, and while you're quite right in that split front lines between generals merge, if you put an 'army group' frontline down as well you can still get the old effect - see:

Sorry for earlier confusion, and hope this helps. If it doesn't, let me know and I can try and think some more and see if there's not another way.

I am afraid it does not work. No matter how much I try, with the field marshal front line, without it, only with army group, I've tried every variant and as soon as the front lines meet, they merge.
I took a screenshot. The individual front lines have to be about 2 provinces away in order to not merge. 1 province away or adjacent and they will merge.
Is there anyway I can turn off the AI? I know you can turn off all AI with console commands, but any way I can turn off only my AI? Honestly, this should've been an option in the game to begin with, but either way, anyway I can do it myself? As long as I can have fun playing it the way I want to, I don't really care that much about achievements.

Hmmm....I've had a bit more of a look and it seems to be fine for splitting an army (as long as there is also a field marshal frontline) into two bits, but more than two bits and it auto-merges again. Using two armies, I can get a decent amount of splitting along a frontline (see below, and I've attached the save for this as well if you want to try loading it up to see how it looks like in-game), but I know you're hoping for me. Might be worth posting a bug report in the bug reports forum? Sorry I can't help more, good luck :)

This is a very long shot, but can you use the new control groups to get around this problem? Do they override the unit controller any more than manually clicking?

Control Groups
This might actually be one of my favourites :D Was reminded about this in a forum thread about UI improvements people wanted and realized I had totally forgotten how nice it was. You can now hit Ctrl+number to save any selection, and then hit the number key again to bring that up. It works with any selection, not just divisions, so you can mark areas, air wings etc and jump between them quickly. Double tapping the number key moves camera to the selection.

Control groups is just a shortcut used to more quickly be able to select army groups and it did not override the merger of the front lines. The AI still takes control of the front line. Only Paradox seems to be able to fix this issue by simply adding a button to stop the AI from doing anything. I'll try to appeal to them but I am not holding my breath.

Thanks anyway, enjoy the dlc. :)

I am experiencing the same and it makes very difficult managing frontlines (I do the same as the OP, assign sections of a frontline to part of the army with CRT+right click) but now it doesn't work anymore and the frontlines merge. Considering that the AI constantly reshuffles and moves units the only option is to unassign those units from the army (which means no planning bonus etc). Creating different armies for every sections of the frontline seems to be the only option but in cases like Italy (the faction I play the most) where there are only very few generals this makes it difficult (and one also wonders why after so long a major has so few historical leaders in the game, will we ever have more of them?)
