Quick example -

1066 King of Scotland starts with 3 demense - if he has 2 sons and gives Son 1 the Count of Fife and Son 2 the Count of Strathclyde he can no longer give out the Duke of Strathclyde title to his Son 2.

If he revokes the count of fife title from Son 1 he can then give the Duke title to Son 2 and THEN give the count title back to Fife.

Short version - you cant give out Duke titles if you have no open provinces even though one has nothing to do with the other.

Wasn't 1.03 changed so that duchies are linked to provinces, i.e. a duke must be a count *within* the duchy. What provinces belong to the duchy of Strathclyde?

this was present in previous versions. you can never give away titles when your demesne size is 1. the option in the menu is grayed out.

A duke has to have demesne. There IS no duke without a county.
That is not the point of this bug report, Tracid. :)

You can give your son both titles, though. Grant him the county, then select him and grant him the duke title.
The point of this bug report is that if you have only one demesne province, you cannot give out any titles, no matter whether you have legitimate targets.

E.g. as mentioned, you may have son who is a count but you cannot make him a duke unless you have at least two demesne provinces.

It appears to be the case that the "grant title" option is linked to "having >=2 demesne provinces", which is equivalent to "being able to grant a count title" - this should not be the case. Even if I have only 1 demesne province I should still be able to give out kingdom and duchy titles.

Hope this makes it clear.

No. 1.03 was changed such that when you gave out a duchy title, all direct count vassals of yourself that belong to that duchy become direct count vassals of the new duke, which is a different matter entirely.

Thanks Peter :)

The problem/bug is that you should be able to give a Count a Duke title regardless of your own demese size because Duke titles are not dependant on the demense amounts but are only dependant on the requirement that the target is already a count.

As Peter said the option to give a title becomes greyed out once your down to one demense even though you may have titles than can be legaly given out ie Dukes

And yes it does affect AI ... thats how I noticed it. I saw the King of Scotland with 3 demense ..he gave 1 each to his sons and I wondered why he didnt make the Strathclyde one a Duke ... which would make sense since as a king you dont get any prestige for count vassals. So I saved and started as the King only to find out the reason he wasnt giving out the Duke title was because he couldnt. (He may not have wanted to anyway *shrug* but he should have the option too).

Makes sense

OK, I must have remembered some suggestion instead of the actual change. Thanks for clarification.
