If you're having problems with Majesty crashing on the intro videos or any in-game videos, you need to update the version of bink32w.dll the game uses. The version I used to get around this problem is at DLL-download.net. http://www.dll-download.net/binkw32.html download the dll file and copy it over the older binkw32.dll in the main Majesty direction (you'll see the old DLL file there, also the expansion uses this spot as well so you don't need to put it in two places) after that start up the game and it should work like a charm! It did for me.

I also forgot to mention, if you receive a crash when starting a quest, you need to disable music. You can do this by going to your data folder in the majesty directory and opening MusicTracks.txt and deleting everything but the first line, which is just a placeholder. Save that and run the game and you won't experience that crash anymore and you'll still have all the speech and sound effects.

So?

It works?
Expansion seems to have a lot more trouble staying stable than the original.
I run on XP Pro.
And Guh, I'd hate to have to turn off the music, that's half a game for me.

Are there more maps, large ones? Anyone have a ZIP with maps or a link for authorized maps?

Is this fix for Gold? Because the original Majesty and the NE separately install to different folders, so it doesn't make sense to me for that .dll file to be used in the same spot by both games.

If it IS gold, I seem to remember a problem with the music files because they were in .mpg format(?) as opposed to whatever format they come in the original/NE separately. If you could convert the music files to that format, they might work.

It sounds to me like the fix is just to get around the crash so you can play the game, not to actually play the movies.

About the music problem above, I also seem to remember using a shortcut like "-nocdmusic" or "-nocd" will stop the game from attempting to play the music, rather than deleting the files as detailed above.

Thanks to Heroic Avatar, there is now a real fix, that allows you to watch the intro movies:

Turn of direct draw

(To do this, click start, execute, type "dxdiag", press enter, select display. There you´ll find DDraw and a button "deactivate")

The Windows XP Intro Crash Workaround

OK for those of you who don't know:
Majesty and its expansion seems to have some serious issues with Windows XP.

What you probably did not know was that its not XP thats the issue its Direct Draw, it really does not like Direct Draw.

If you turn off Direct Draw, (at least in my case) the game will work properly, you don't have to turn off the sound, you don't have to replace blink.dll etc.
The movies will play properly and the sound will play properly.

I do however crash from time to time for no specific reason, but this generally only happens when I have active background programs running, such as Windows messenger or MSN.

So here are the instructions on how to turn off Direct Draw:
1) Go to the start menu
2) Select the run command
3) Type: Dxdiag
4) Go to the Display tab.
5) Click on the button disabling: DirectDraw Acceleration

Its just that simple.

Remember to always turn Direct Draw back on when you finish playing the game, or at the very least, before you play another program, it has a major impact on how other games look.

PS: I found this information out almost a year ago when I tried to install the game on my new pc and it would not play, it would immediatly crash to desktop.
I did not come up with this workaround myself. i cannot take credit for it, but thank you for thinking I did.
Also, the original Majesty works fine for me without this workaround. Its the Northern Expansion Add-on that I had trouble with.

I tried every one of the solutions listed above...

None of them worked.

I have the original Majesty (bought in 2000) patched to 1.4. Back then it was on a Win2k Machine. Now I have a p4 Laptop with XPSp2... and no matter what I turned on or off, updated or tweaked, it would load the splash screen then exit.

...But I did find a solution.

On this site here
Majesty Game Updates

I found a patched version of the main gaime files that when extracted into my installation, stopped the crashing to windows on start up.

Now, I emphasise that I have the original CD and I *think* these files were designed to get around the copy protection, but I can't be certain. It's definately not the whole game and I still need the CD to play. Movies don't run, but there's no crashes either. And my DirectDraw and Hardware Acc is on. It's possible somone worked out what the problem was and packed it up in a handy zip.

They have the fix for all versions of the game plus the offical patches.

I suspect that xp sp2 doesn't like the copy protection and shuts down when I try to run the game.

So If you've spent about four or five hours trying every trick listed to get the game to work and failed - try this.

I apologise in advance if this is a crack or illegal file set of some sort. It appears to be more of an unoffical fix. It is the only thing that worked for me so I thought I would bring it to the attention of everyone concerned, both to help people who are stuck and suggest it be made unoffically official?

Regards

Raphael
