Cannot create a Retinue

It says I have 0/599 available, But when I go to create on the right hand side with the plus icon, It's greyed out. And when I hover over it, it says my maximum has been reached?

Also, How do smaller countries get the availability to use it? It took me getting 5 countries and a duchy before I had enough manpower?

Any help?

Each retinue cost a certain number of retinue points. For example, the 100 heavy infantry + 400 archers retinue cost 600 points (and is the cheapest for most countries). You simply don't have anough retinue points.

your retinue points is determined by your total army size (ie. your demesne and that of your vassals).
to see it more clearly, read the (rather detailed) tooltip by hovering over the numbers, ie. the 0/599 in your case?

that said, an emperor whose total realm army manpower is 80k (it does not necessarily mean that he can raise ALL of them, but that's the TOTAL amount of men in his realm) will have a much larger retinue cap than a duke within the same empire who has a 10% share of that (ie., 8k between his demesne and his vassals)
increasing the Military Organization tech also increases retinue cap at the cost of lowering the total levies

Your retinue points is determined by the size of you and your vassals levies, aswell as your Military Organization tech. Tough does not give much, it's atleast something

I'm currently playing as Sheikh of Andalucia (previously Emir of Granada), and I've no chance of making a retinue (despite being able to call on 30k troops). When I mouse over the retinue tab, it says my "military organisation" level is too low.

How high? I figured out what it was straight away (not complete noob).

As regards my current lands, the highest demense value is 2.0 with my capital (Granada) being either 1.3 or 1.5.

military organization only affects a percentage RELATIVE to the total manpower of YOUR realm (ie. if you're a duke, then your demesne and that of your counts and their vassals). Even with a military org of 1, if you have a realm manpower of 100k (e.g. you're either the HRE or the ERE), then you could easily have around 10k-20k retinue points (like in my current Byzantium game: I now have 8,500 in retinue :laugh: )
