I'm about 100 turns on impossible at the moment. At war with 3 AI most of time.

Lich was the first one I tried to live in peace, but his 3rd tribute proposal seemed to big and so war started. So I had hard time defending my west city. I'm sure to kill 20-30, not least, units there. Once the city wos even lost and then recaptured. I was attacked from sea and land, by 10 units at once easily. My causalties were much less, but several units easily. The war is still in progress, but it seems the hard part is finished.

2nd wizard goes to war with me across see. This was much-much easier to handle since he has worser troops and also can't mass them. Also, we had some peacetime in breaks.

3rd AI person is one I attacked myself. This one just defends his capitol, sends on me not more than single units, sometimes. The time is come to finish him, but it seems hard. Lost several units already to his mages.

So what I think about difference in 1st and 3rd wizards? This is either bug, or they have different "personality".

Well I just defeated the Grand Librarian (or something like that), at first it was pretty tough, as soon as I set foot in his area warriors and other units started to appear out of nowhere right next to my units, it was slow going defeating all those units (the lightning bolt helped a lot). I took one level 8 city after many turns and then set up forts around his border, after that I rushed his main city, defeating him became really easy after I built 4 cleric units. With my healing spells and the clerics healing spells I was able to heal any damage his units might do and quickly overwhelmed him.

During this time he did attack units grouped around one of my own cities so he wasn't totally defensive in the war but strangely the monsters roaming around the countryside where more of a challenge than the wizard in the end. They seemed to amass right after the war started with hordes of spiders, a few ogres, a fire elemental and such suddenly invading my realm.

The strange thing was that he kept attacking different units, when he had a chance of eliminating one unit he started on the other, and he avoided attacking mages and went for veterans instead.
Kinda strange imo.

Yes, the main problem is that once you have high tier units with a bit of buffs you can just exterminate everything on the map without any difficulty.
The main resistance = Vampires when you face 3-4, but it's only a pain for your weak units like mages/clerics. (happened to me yesterday)
And once you build temples, units are really OP.I usually end up with no food problems, no mana probs and all my cities upgrades going to money just to upgrade units buy the ones at 700 gold. Thats's all.
I hope some aggressivity is added to the AI behaviour :)

(btw, all this in on highest difficulty lvl)

Oh and btw, i dont know if it's because of the difficulty lvl but last game, i have tier 1 units just 3 towns, AI at war, so sent 2 warriors+2 archers+ 1 minotaur and as soon as i arrived close to his city, i got welcomed by a rain of fire ( imagine on tier 1 units lvl 2 max ) and next turn was area lightning = lost about all my units ! :)

It certainly isn't afraid of AOE nuking your attacking armies, that's for sure!

CiV's AI sucks at attacking because of its inability to manage range attacks, but that's different from Warlock's AI which won't attack at all (except for the neutral monster AI which actually manages to take over cities from time to time).

Well unless they changed Ai the code recently Civ5's combat AI's downfall went far beyond a simple inability to use ranged units. Civ5's AI would be improved if it just advanced all it's units uniformly in your general direction but it never even managed that, it often just randomly retreated from an undefended city. Hell atleast the warlock AI actually trys to build and use a navy. Anyway, there both relatively bad combat AI. Civ5's had years to fix its problems though, warlock has had a couple of days.

Someone needs to hire the coders of the advance wars series. Those AI's knew how to throw units at you.

I call BS on your CiV's AI assessment because CiV's AI does exactly that. Problem is that that's all it did, but it managed to get units moving toward your cities and attack it.

Warlock on the other hand... last night AI just removed about 6 units away from its capital city and let me surround it.

Yeah, i agree. I have now tried twice a game with large map with 5 rival mages in challenging . First time i was pressed down by hordes of skeletons and strong mice. Took a screenshot with 5 mice, 4 skel archers and 4 skel warriors.. they were all againts me. Second game i started with my own island, this time ai decided to spell spam my main cities with locust spells... and after i invaded the main landmass i had to rebuild my army twice and it was warmly greeted with fire aoe spell... last try with zombies and ghosts ended in three consecutive turns of fire aoe. :) I dont have to mention that every ai declared war againts me one after another. Fun :)

Not it doesn't.

Civ5's AI withdraws if certain conditions are met. If you actually just AI with several city states on deity setting the AI won't even advance against you because the unit count of your alliance is so "high" because the citys states produce so many units. I mean half the time you have a decent quanity of units on the ground in civ5 the AI will just flee his units away straight into the ocean, where your waiting ships just pick them apart.

Are you recalling some beta moments? Because I have never seen such ludicrous behavior on retail. To point out how unlikely your scenario is, if you played on deity on early release of CiV, AI had so much units that it covered the entire landmass if you played on anything other than pangea. Even after that blanket of units got fixed it never had this 'retreat to the sea' behavior because the core problem was that AI just kept marching its units toward you without a thought, which let the player pick off it's waves of units with well placed range units.

Also if you play continents, AI in CiV will actually make progression against each other. Warlock on the other hand, I've seen a single city change ownership in 180 turns.

The whole "CiV AI retreat its units to the sea" never happened on retail.

If you actually even own a copy of CiV, try DoW on every AI you meet on emperor+ difficulty. I DoW on every AI I meet on Warlock because I get tired of their demands but it doesn't change a thing because they don't do anything to me. Try that on CiV.

Playing on impossible with 8 AI, huge map.
Two guys so far declare a war on me, first one does nothing so far - i mean summoned 3 wolves on my continent. I attacked the second one, and meanwhile another AI attacked my enemy from the other side. Cities there were going from hand to hand, and mass fire spells were cast. I went straight for the capital (closest city to me) and i would never make it if not for ghost unit, which AI could not harm.
AI is not so bad, focuses on my vulnerable units, goes for the finish and withdraws wounded to heal ...

Any update from developers? Main problem seems to be that human player have a lot more cities early on and even conquer better the neutrals.

The other problems are mainly that human focus the cities (+100 food each food city on turn 50) and can make super enchanted units. Give AI more city bonus (or focus!) and better unit values (resistance)

"impossible" mode is far too easy (and boring) in moment.
