Hi,

I just have a question: Is it possible to see the selected difficult level in a started game? I set it to the highest one but I get spammed with no-aggression pacts/alliance offers and at least my direct neighbours didn't expand like I do.

So either I play on wrong difficult or AI have hidden strength wich will come up later game (or worse: AI isn't a challenge)

Any ideas how to double check playing AI level?

Just wait until you start attacking them an they have a gigantic army lol. They are bugged it seems like an never move out to conquer you even if they declare war. Several thread mention it already.

Ok thanks, checked level, its written inside savegame name (ingame viewable: load/save). Its "impossible" so the correct one.

Well I'm on turn ~60 now and it plays like the demo. I run over the environment, create a lot of cities and nobody of the AI players seems to have ambitions to attack me.

Isn't the sense of playing "impossible" that there is some action? why is nobody declaring war on me? They offer alliances/NA-pacts and even offer gold/mana to get this.

I mean I played the demo and now on highest difficult but never had any fight with the other players (AI leaders). I should fear this wars, but instead I pray to get one before the game ends... And no, declaring war on myself just to have this fun isn't the solution. Challenging difficult levels should be (YES!) challenging & threatening but I don't have this feeling! At least not now...

Hmm I play on normal and I have been attacked by two enemy factions in one game. Granted both wars started by them making unreasonable demands on me that I refused but still...

THe game is really easy. The only way the AI could beat you is at the start of the game. All you need is a commando of strong unit and you'll end up clearing any huge army the AI send to you. You just need to build 2-4 elite troops (Vampire/troll...) and buff them as much as you can and they'll be undefeatable by the unbuffed army.

A bit sad because it makes the other plane strategically useless.

I think the main issue is that higher difficulties just give the AI more free resources. That's what most games of this type do, and often it works. In Warlock it doesn't work because the AI has no idea how to spend those free resources. It just builds loads of weak units that don't stand a chance against a few elite troops, so all it does is make the game more tedious in stead of more difficult, since you have to mow down sometimes dozens of weak units before you can take the enemy's cities.

Sometimes it is easy, sometimes not so much. I think a lot has to do with what resources the AI starts with and what quests/loot it finds. I have had an enemy stockpile elite grade units so early in the game I just had to quit (though given the AIs lack of agressiveness I suppose I could have waited forever but when I see I am totally outclassed like that I just quit).

I have played over 20 hours on this, and over a 100 hours on the demo. As I feared, the AI is no good.

I hope this goes multiplayer soon because the AI is only good for training purposes.

Is it possible that the AI is not attacking you because you are so much stronger than it? It seems that way, from the fact that they are giving you gifts for non-aggression pacts. They are intimidated by you, so they give you stuff not to hurt them. And they don't attack because they know they would be doomed.

No... AI has loads of units in its cities, but refuse to use it for anything.

Only the monster faction seems to bother with attacking cities.

What people tend to forget that alot depends on the situation. This game still has much better AI than AOW or CIV5 for that matter.

Give them a few patches to improve this and I think normal players will find it good enough. Sure, no AI will ever satisfy hardcore players but like Poopfaust said, that is why multiplayer exists.

Your point is very good, though it should be noted that the AoW series and Civ V are to all intents and purposes braindead when it comes to empire and combat AI. ;)

Sure it may be a reason. So the question is why I dominate the AI on "impossible" difficult so easy?

I mean I not even going for special stuff, I just expand concequently and have cities concentrating on stuff. The basics for playing highest diff level. If this basics are enough to dominate, something is really wrong here. Did nobody test the game on expert levels?

Meanwhile I'm in my first war. The AI nearly managed to conquer one of my dozen cities but on the end, when the AI player was ready to conquer it stops and decided to go for the next city. Well now this player is surrounded by my troops :(

The AI is in a constant state of evolution. It is much better now than it was a few weeks ago and will get better as the game goes on.

Yes, it's a matter of getting a good rules set in place. That should have been done before release, and it wasn't. Tactical combat AI is pretty decent, but strategic is still a mess. I'd suggest waiting a bit and watching the next few patches.

I noticed in my first game that the AIs build far too many expensive buildings like wizard and cleric guilds and universities but don't build any wizards or clerics. That could be because they are paying too much maintenace on all the buildings. They need to emphasise a few good troop types and build several of those rather than building everything.

They can't afford and don't need trolls, halbadiers and stubborn knights all at the same time until they have enough cities to support them. All of these troops do basically the same job. I'm not sure exactly what the ratio is but they need something like 5 times as many economic buildings (fields, pumkin fields, markets, granary etc) as military ones, and they should avoid building 2 wizard guilds. Maybe the developers need to reduce the maintenace costs for buildings and maybe some of the expensive troops for the AIs, so we get to face something other than basic troops plus a few halbadiers or minotaurs.
