You can probably manage making most countries fun to play, but most of them do not have any special flavour of their own. For some this matters, others not so much. At least this was true for HOI3. I think that the devs were going to give some of the 'main' minors more attention, but I could be wrong.

Haha, +1. Bloody big koalas

Why does everyone from the land of Oz always bring up drop bears? National obsession? :p

I don't know about the rest of Oz but the drop-bear is probably one of the few animals in WA that won't actually kill you.

Savage buggers though.

What WOULD be a good country to start off as ? What's HOI's Portugal ?

Many people recomend Italy.

Why?

An early start so you get right in to it staright away. I understand that it's virtually impossible to lose this first conquest.

You've got ships & sub's to play with too, a little bit of everything to learn the ropes but you won't get overwhelmed.

Personally, I think Japan for exactly the same reasons but once you've learned the ropes, you can conquer the world.

I don't think it's possible to conquer the world as Italy, although I'm equally sure that there are people who have done it.

Thanks to the ability to exploit Wargoals in the final TFH expansion for HOI3, you could take over countries by piggy-backing onto someone else's war, and essentially steal the "kill" without ever committing any troops to the battle. Before that, in order to take over the world as Albania, you actually had to send in your own troops to occupy the major Victory Point provinces. Such hardships just to take over a measly planet, and in its current sorry state, it doesn't even have a lot of market value if you do manage to take it.

I always like to play a small country for the first time, so I can easily manage it (you have only a few provinces, a few units). I find playing great powers for the first time a bit owerwhelming for me....

If you have never played one of the HOI games before try Canada, They can usually do anything well and don't tend to be bothered by the enemies. You can experiment at your own leisure. Italy once you join the war your going to be under attack and once USA joins the war you will be facing invasion.

I second this, Canada is a very good starting country because >99% of the games no one will invade it and it has enough IC, resources, leadership and manpower to let you learn the game and play pretty much as you like.
