I found some people with the surname of Lancaster and York(the two branches that fought in the War of the Roses), but there are probably a lot of them who are unrelated to the noble branches and just derived their name from the area they originated in. There's some Montforts and Molyneuxes(Peter Molyneux) as well. The House of Percy arrived in Britain with the Norman conquest and now still holds the Duchy of Northumbria.

Bear in mind that a lot of the older surnames the game uses weren't actually ever used as such. "Cerdicing" would merely be "the descendants of Cerdic" here, and the family is far more likely to have adopted a territorial designation later on (de X or of Y). Also surnames were very prone to mutation - a surname of "de Ros" could end up being "Rose", "Ross", "Rouse", "Rowse" or even "Royce".

The dynasties might exist still, but the family names have been changed, since they didn't originally have what we'd recognise as a family name.

I wonder how many people are living ordinary lives without knowing that they have a claim on k_England! Apparantly Christopher Lee was actually a Karling. I suppose there's hundreds of thousands of Karlings out there who's ancestors drifted away from the main line and took another name.

If you think about the mathematics of human reproduction, every single living European today is a Karling descendant and has a claim on k_england.

I'm not sure that these things are as exponential as they first appear, as for most of history child mortality was huge. I read an article that said we are all descendants of whoever, because you have 2 childred, 4 grandchildren, 8 greats etc but that clearly hasnt happened, apart from maybe the last 100 years (since penicillin and the Haber process etc).

This thread illustrates how dynasties were cropped by mortality etc https://www.reddit.com/r/AskHistory/comments/2ih6m8/are_there_still_living_karlings/

Seem to remember that theres only 1 English peerage continuously held (baronial rank or higher, entitled to a seat in the old House of Lords) that can be traced back to before the Wars of the Roses.
That doesn't mean thers no descendents of old families left but they were of minor branches or like the Percies they lost their titles but later regained them or gained new ones

That's gonna make killing all the Karlings difficult but a still necessary undertaking.

Also bear in mind that there were an awful lot of bills of attainder flying around during the War of the Roses and the Civil War. Those killed a lot of titles, without necessary killing off the bloodlines.

In my current / just finished game (it's 1444 and there isn't really anything to accomplish that I set out to do) a de Courtenay became king of England. I assume that it is this family, which is still around. This was a 1290s start, though, so not quite as ancient as the Karlings.

I was under the impression that 'Cerdicing' came from the name 'Cerdic' (who was the first King of Wessex) and 'ing' which in some old Germanic languages means 'son of' or 'decedent of' and was a reference to the House of Wessex, which died out in the 1000s with Edward the Confessor and Edgar the Aetheling.

In the recorded male line anyway. There are some theories that Edgar may have had children (that or he lived to approximately 104), but regardless, his sister Margaret married Malcolm of Scotland, and their granddaughter married Henry I and produced Matilda, who was the mother of Henry II. Every king of England after them has been descended from them. I suppose in a way the House of Cerdicing is still ruling, just under a different name, with the only breaks being William I, II, Henry I, and Stephen (depending on how you want to count him). So approximately 1100 years. Not bad going.

Ed Tudor Pole is actually a Tudor descendant. Nice guy, met him once.

In Scotland, House Bruce (c. 12th Century) still exists along with their noble holdings.

Sir Christopher Lee, God rest him, was a verifiable descendant of Charlemagne on his mother's side. He also wrote an awesome metal album about Charlemagne, which is where we get the "I Shed Blood of Saxon Men" achievement from.
