Can you attach a pedestrian path to the side of a bridge ?

I have a short/moderate length bridge that I notice pedestrians using to go from one side of the river to the other side (to my surprise, since I didn't notice a sidewalk on the bridge). But I would like to attach a pedestrian pavement path to the side of the bridge, but I can not seem to get it to work.
Using the page-up key will allow me to place the pathway right along side the bridge, and near-perfect height matching the height of the bridge, but the pathway doesn't "connect" with the sidewalk along the side of the bridge, and thus pedestrians cant use it.

Has anyone tried to do this ? Have you been successful ? If so, what is the trick or method on getting it to work ?
Your help and advice would be appreciated. Thanks !

i'm pretty sure they only attach at their ends, not their sides. just make a standalone bridge

I attach pedestrian walkways to my elevated roadways.

I use the pedestrian walkways under the road menu. The pedestrian walkways under the landscaping tools will not snap to the elevated roadways.
Since I've never played an un-modded game I'm not sure if these are vanilla or modded in.
Most likely also need to have a road anarchy mod enabled to allow this type of connection. Not sure on that since I've never played without road anarchy enabled.

They allow snapping to the elevated sections. Then have to use a traffic manager (TMPE) to restrict vehicular use of the pedestrian walkways, otherwise vehicles will use them too.
