My question: Which king has the longest reign in history? Remember it covers any king of any country at any time ever.

Well, I know Gustav V of Sweden (1858-1950) was king between 1907-1950 which is a pretty long time, but I don't know if it's the longest.

Yes, Pepi was an Egyptian pharaoh (2246-2152 BC), 5th king of the 6th dynasty.

He was only six when he was ruler, and his mom served as regent. His accound is a bit contested, but he still was in rule for longer than anyone else.

As I browsed through several sources I noticed that indeed Pepi II is quite often called th longest ruling monarch ever. However I think we should be rather cautious in comparing him with King Louis XIV or Queen Victoria.

First of all several sources acknowledge that information on his reign is based only on Egyptian tradition. There are also some sources the give him significantly shorter reign (64 yers, over 60 years, 90 years). And then there are even differences with regard to exact dates of his reign. The dates that you mentioned are most commonly used, but there are also others that move his reign good 30 years back (2278 - 2187 B.C.; 2278 - 2184 B.C. or 2275 - 2185 B.C. - the last one comes from the newest edition of The Columbia Encyclopedia). Plus if we add to that the fact that he was the last ruler of the 6th dynasty, and the end of his reign marked the end of Old Kingdom and period of disintegration of the country, then I think it would be reasonable to attach rather big question mark to his claim of being the longest ruling monarch ever. He was certainly historical person (he even has his Pyramid in Saqqara), his reign was apparnetly very long. But was that indeed 94 years?

Emperor Hirohito reigned for 63 years (1926-1989).

King Bhumipol or Rama IX of Thailand is in office 55 years (1946-2001) and still counting. At the age of 72 he might still add a few years.

Just for comparison:

Soviet Union: 69 years (1922-1991)
Rule of the PRI in Mexico: 71 years (1929-2000)
