I'm around 2295 or so, and have like 163 planets of which 145 or so are in a single sector... - and the lag makes it almost unplayable. Maybe the Sector Governor can't figure out what to do with that monthly income :).
If it's that, I could probably micromanage my planets faster... - but I still have a 5 core planets maximum (- oh well actually my homeworld is the only planet I manage myself.)

Well I might try to dissolve that gigantic sector, fire my admiral and general and 7 scientists, hire 9 additional sector governors and split the planets up for testing purposes (- although I liked having almost all planets under that "10% additional research"-governor...). I think I'd be allowed to have 39 sectors iirc, but I only have 14 leader slots...

I really hope there's a fix for this, or a workaround - I'd really like to finish this game (- I have to colonise 195 planets to get to the 40% winning condition. Now that I attacked 2 small empires to make them vassals, there was a push among the other empires towards alliances... - one neutral empire even asked me for protection / vassalisation... - I think there's only two empires left without alliance. Wars will be difficult, but soon I'll have my last type of planet-colonisation researched... maybe I can find another 30 within my borders ;-)

The galaxy is a middle-sized 600 stars elliptical galaxy, no crisis yet.
My PC isn't high end, but a solid gaming PC i5-6500 at 3.2 GHz, 16 GB Ram, Geforce 970 GTX, Windows 10 64 bit, SSD.

P.S. number of POPs is above 1100 if I remember correctly. And I haven't timed the lag, but it feels like more than 5 sec for every single action and at months end or during war probably double that...

I've been moving down to smaller galaxy sizes each time I reach endgame, restarting a new empire. It's just not fun when playing on Fastest turn into Normal, especially when absolutely nothing happens.

You have to realize that 1 year is 365 turns. Playing 365 turns in 5 min is amazingly fast.
Compared to its competitors Paradox games use to run very fast and smooth despite being very complex games.

Do we actually know that it slows down because of ships?

If that is the case it's actually easy to fix.
When you unlock cruiser you cannot build single corvette any longer. You must but a unit of 2 corvette that are handled as a single corvette with doubled Hull, damage Shields....
When you unlock destroyer you can buy a unit of 2 cruisers or a unit of 4 corvette.
When you unlock battleship you can build 8 corvette, 4 cruisers, 2 destroyers.

This mean that of in the current patch there are 500 battleships, 1k destroyers, 2k cruisers, 4k corvette in the galaxy handled as 7.5k different units, after the chance there are 2k units.

This does not fix battle lag though

I'll be trying a small galaxy too next time. But what do you mean by "nothing happens"? I've even been using spacebar / the stop button regularly for each decision / alarm during my about 70 hours of gametime - I hardly had a day or two go by without being able to afford a new construction somewhere (- as soon as you get to 90 minerals per day... - now I'm at 800 if the sector governor is set to 50%. And all the rest of my gametime was probably waiting for the lags to end (- I'm still only at 2295 or so in my very first game) - and I've done nothing but expand my empire peacefully for the first 60h, but that was really hard work... - I have like 20 civilian ships (could probably have done with 3 or 4 constructors less during most of the time, but at peak times I employed them all.

In the late game it does get increasingly tedios, to the point that I'll pause the game, issue orders, buildings and whatever, then go to a system with nothing in it and keep the camera there. About 200-300 years in, it's really annoying to play, so much that it's not really enjoyable.

It feels more like 12 turns, as you get income each month. If you actually don't do anything for those 12 turns and it takes 6 minutes or so it gets somewhat annoying.

Agreed. Medium galaxy with 600 stars and after 2600 it's barely playable. There was no major lag issues in early game apart from occasional small stutters, FPS drops and glitches during fleet battles, but in late game it's allways lagging. It's getting quite annoying since I really want to finish galaxy conquest (would be a shame not to do it when I'm like two steps away from it) but the lag is too much.

1 turn is not 1 day. There is no concept of turn in real time strategy. If there ever was anything remotely related to turns it would be 1 month = 1 turn, as you get resources and science upgrades per month, not per day. Still does not explain the massive amount of slowdown, even the expected amount of slowdown, and judging by the results it is clearly not the complexity of the system, otherwise 1k stars would be 40% slower than 600 stars, when in reality the difference is not as great.

Late game? I can't even pass the first month because every time my fleets jump the game becomes a stuttering mess (1 day = 1 second), game doesn't even use much cpu. 1.01 did nothing. Reinstalling windows 10 did nothing. Refunding the game helped a little.

I would go watch unique systems/study ring worlds and figure out roughly how large they REALLY are and how they function with gravity and all

So, I've played a lot of Stellaris this week and have gotten three empires past year 2400 and have with each one it has gotten to the point where the game goes so slow that it's practically unplayable.

To show my point I have timed how long it takes to go through exactly 1 year on the fastest time setting. (Note: only looking at galaxy map, no fleets moving or battles taking place or any player action, playing in fullscreen mode. PC specs: i7-3770 CPU, 16GB DDR3 RAM, GTX 660 ti GPU, Windows 8.1)
1000 star galaxy, year 2400, 159 colonies: one year took 6min 22sec (view map)
600 star galaxy, year 2408, 104 colonies: one year took 3min 10sec (view map)
400 star galaxy, year 2447, 172 colonies: one year took 5min 16sec (view map)
1000 star galaxy, year 2200, 1 colony: one year took 1min 0sec
600 star galaxy, year 2200, 1 colony: one year took 1min 0sec
400 star galaxy, year 2200, 1 colony: one year took 1min 0sec

As my results show, in the worst case I'm getting about a 6x slowdown, and that's without actually doing anything, when moving fleets to attack enemies it is far worse. Also, this is happening in every game in which my empire gets too large, no matter the galaxy size. This is quite frustrating because I'd like to keep playing until I have total galactic domination but it's just not possible with how slow the game gets.

I know I can't be the only one experiencing this because even in the multiplayer stream they did there were major slowdown issues in the last fights they showed.
I know Escher mentioned an imminent performance fix five days ago in this reddit thread on Monday and he speculated that they would have a fix released ASAP (mentioning as early as Tuesday), so I do not know if they have released this fix or not. Hopefully they do fix it though because the game is fantastic and I'd like to play my empires into the late-game.

According to UserBenchmark.com web site your CPU is 18th and your GPU is 15th in speed rank out of all CPU &GPUs ... that is very fast and faster than the majority of the PC used by the " typical" Paradox gamers.

Windows 8.1 is not my favorite. I still have Win 7 on my game PC and windows 10 on the other PC in the house. I have read that 8.1 is slow for games......

Remember on the livestream at the end of the second day when the game turned into a slideshow as soon as war broke out? At the time I thought: 'well, with so many players poor performance is kind of excusable to a point.' But no. It gets that bad, and gets worse, even in single player on 600 stars in the mid to late game. It does eventually become unplayable. Very disappointing. :(

I can confirm as well on a 1000 star map, definitely getting to an unplayable point. At this rate it would take me a month to win a conquest victory, I have faith in everyone at Paradox though, I am sure it is getting addressed.

Speaking of long wait times, Is anyone else starting to go mad at the monthly auto save on ironman?

I mean, this was an annoying problem in eu4 and ck2 that paradox eventually fixed by spacing out the saves a bit more. I don't really understand why they thought monthly autosaves would be fine here, if people raised a fuss about it in their other games. Feels like a careless mistake that would take 2 seconds to fix.

From what I have notice to play 1k system required a good rig.
If i play with my laptop I only able to play up to 600 system.

I wish we could have more advance graphic settings.
