One of the few things that cannot be improved is the transport ship, the range never changes, and you can never add any kind of anti aircraft stuff or deck guns even, though historically they did get them in world war two.

Maybe even a Liberty Class and Victory Class type of ship would be nice.

I agree there should be a research path that results in improvements to speed, range and defensiveness, perhaps also assisiting in off-setting amphibious penalties I see no need to have differant types of transports detailed. Seems unnecessary for a grand strategy game.

besides modern carriers are somewhat a hybrid because they have a large dock at their stern for small amphibious assault
besides armed trasports apeared in first world war

Well, it has been asked before that HOI3 should have 2 types of transport, one represents the Merchant-marine type, the other represents the beach landing Type (perhaps make the beach landing transports an attachment to the merchant marines which decrease stats such as speed/range but allows amphibious assaults [or at the least significantly decreases amphibious penalties]).

I think current system reflects this exactly. You either produce merchant marine (convoys) or amphibious LSI/LST ships - Transports. The effectiveness could be perhaps improved through adding something in tech tree naval or land strategy, but no new ships classes.

Increase amphibious landing penalties and then add on a 'Landing Craft' attachment for TPs that would reduce those penalties.

That way anyone can attempt an amphibious landing, if they want too, but you should be able to tell the difference if the troops landing at Normandy have specially built landing craft or are just trying to Gallipoli it.

Then just make the 'Landing Craft' attachment pretty expensive and require some research and Blammo! problem (mostly) solved.

But yeah, TPs should have more classes.

Named classes, too. All the ships should have named classes. Maybe even a game mechanic where the class name will come from the first ship of that class completed (if the Tirpitz is built months before the Bismark, it could be called the Tirpitz-class).

:D Excellent idea :D, transports with attachments. Such attacment could not only be landing craft, but also increased AA, ASW, tankers for range, corvettes for escorts etc...

Well, as tempting as it may sound, I think most of these problems could (and should) be solved through tech tree. However adding Destroyer escorts brigade (in the form similar to fighter escorts brigade) to the TPs would be nice.

Seem to recall the current CORE mod has 4 types of transport and various naval Doctrines which improve your amphibious capability and open up building the more specialised models (LSTs etc). I assume it is meant to model all the time and effort and learning the Allies put in before 1944.

Interestingly this approach seems to match the one Johan has just announced about production and gearing - so in this case you cant suddenly gain the capability to do (successful!) amphibious assaults where you deploy whole armoured and mechanised divisions onto beaches with no specialised equipment. I like it ...

things like huger passenger liners can be used as troop transports, but those take ages to build.

Or with a mobilization system. Like in the WiF mod.

I think, we weed a tech tree and severals models of ships.

Cargos, just able to carry a unit from a point A to a point B.
Landingcraft, which allows amphibious assault mission.
(These 2 kinds of ships are presents in the WiF mod)
Heavy landingcrafts, for tanks amphibious assaults.
Amphibious ships, the LST, brings a bonus.
Amphibious assaults ships, like the Guam class or the French ship "Mistral"

IMHO there might be a solution in either creating a new tech tree (amphibous warfare/assault) or expanding existing one. As for adding new ship classes I do not (IMHO) think that gameplay would benefit greatly by adding these new classes (too much micromanagement and this is actually a grand strategy, not some tactical game such as Steel panthers).

Also, AI would be additionaly confused with new classes of transport and either fail to use adequately or deplete his resources further by producing seas of ships of transport classes, and no invasion by AI would EVER occur.

Besides, majority of landings in WW2 occured mostly unopposed by enemy Notable exceptions are Pacific during second half of the war and Normandy.

This can be solved by applying severe penalty to invading heavily contested beaches without proper techs (example would be Germans attempting Sealion in 1940 with those river barges and getting slaughtered by british).

Combined and amphibious warface became important during WW2, so keeping just one transport ship classes is not realist a Liberty, it's a cargo which cross ocean and carries mans or equipment, it's not a ship able to launch an amphibious assault.

Creating our own fleet, our own division, it's a tactical aspect.

AFAIK any LST/LSI is just a Liberty class with some major mods... So why would we complicate further by diferentiating classes of TPs?

As if anybody uses those BC class ships, to draw a parallell. What I argue is that the gameplay itself will not see major changes anyway (that is whether you use new ship class or new tech tree).

Since modifications to tech tree do not add more micromanagement and are easier for AI to use and to developers to implement (presumably), IMHO that is better solution.

This could lead to Germans having an edge in tank development, while Allies would have an edge in combined operations and amphy warfare and the likes, since they would use most of their research on respective branches, neglecting the other.

AI is able to use every types of units, not with the best way it's right, so why not adding new ships ?

The LST is a special ships, not just a cargo with a ramp. So its capacities are very usefull for amphibious warfare, it brings a bonus for these missions. It's not so complex...

How about an event that allows the player to "mobilize" civilian shipping for military means? This should come at some economic cost, but the end result is an increase in transports or perhaps convoys. I see this more for nations that had large merchant marines prior to the war.

Ex:
"The Congress has authorized the nationalization of private merchant ships"

A: Take them - -$100, +2 dissent, 50 convoys added to your pool

B: They are not needed - nothing
